Like Lana Turner, She Was Discovered, At A Soda Fountain
BY BECKY DOYLE QUINN Times Reporter Carolyn Willey has been discovered - in a way not unlike the way Lana Turner was found. Nineteen-year-old Carolyn was sitting in a Howard Johnson's Restaurant when a photographer came in and took her picture. As a result of that picture, Carolyn will go to Peru to represent the Miami Lions Clubs in the Lions' International Beauty Contest. The picture was published in The Miami Daily News as The Beauty of the Day. Lions Club members saw the picture and called Carolyn for an interview. She ended up among 29 finalists in the local clubs' contest and won it. Her title is now "Miss Lion of 1961" for the local chapters. Carolyn is currently visiting her father, Capt. J. K. Willey at 830 Alhambra Circle. She lives in Elmhurst, Ill., with her mother and her step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Mabee. Carolyn's trip to Peru this September will not be her first one. Her father is an airline captain and the family lived in South America for 10 years. Most of that time was spent in Lima. The contest is to be held in Trujillo, one of the few towns she has never visited, but she plans to visit Lima for a few days after the contest to see some of her friends. She speaks fluent Spanish. She attended Ponce de Leon Junior High and then went to South America for her sophomore and junior years of high school. She returned to attend Gables High her senior year where she was a member of the chorus and on the diving team. She graduated from Gables in 1960 and attended Elmhurst College last year. Now she plans to work at Sears and Roebuck where she has worked part time as a secretary during school. Her step-father is a Sears executive. Carolyn has never entered a beauty contest before, but her success with her first has not gone to her head. Her ambition now, as it was before all the recent and forthcoming excitement is the same: She intends to marry Paul Sack, an Elmhurst graduate now serving in the armed forces. Spring of next year is the tentative time set. When Carolyn went for an interview, one of the three judges asked what her ambitions in life were. She answered, "to be a dedicated housewife." She has never done any modeling either but her beauty has not gone unnoticed. Photographer Carroll Seghers II did a 10 page spread of Carolyn at age 14 entitled "Tom Boy Lady" in Cosmopolitan magazine. She was also a Rose Bowl princess that year. The Lions are also paying for Carolyn's chaperone, Mrs. Alice Urquidi, 830 S. Alhambra, who has been a neighbor and friend for years. She will accompany Carolyn to Peru. CAROLYN WILLEY
Water Tower Struck By Lightning
Lightning struck Coral Gables' old landmark - the Alhambra water tower shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Only minor wiring damage resulted, according to Public Works Director William Fagan. Col. Lynn Perry, of 1924 Ferdinand St., told firemen he saw the bolt strike and knock out the navigational light atop the dome. The tower, once owned and used for storage by Consumers Water Co., is the property of the City, which maintains it as a landmark.

SAC's Ready to Unload The Goods Now, He Says
The Strategic Air Command is "the force that counters aggression," and is fully prepared to do its job, said Col. John McPherson, commanding officer at Homestead Air Force Base. In his talk to the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club last week the Country Club, Colonel McPherson explained how SAC fits into the current crisis situation. It is the SAC's job to see that what our government says goes, and that the Soviets know it, he said. He traced through history how dictators and aggressors have been given a virtual "green light" because there were no forces to oppose them, to "counter their aggression." A certain portion of the air division is on constant ground alert and "we have demonstrated that we are ready to go on airborne alert whenever they want us," he said. "Manned bombers continue to be modernized and are prepared, but missiles are now taking over some of the load of the planes." He also mentioned that B-47 bombers at Homestead are now being replaced by B-52's. The airstrips are being widened and improved to accommodate them. After his remarks, Colonel McPherson presented a film put out by the Air Force, entitled "The Mission of SAC." The defense system could be airborne in 15 minutes were an alert to be sounded.
Food Firm Picked by U. of Miami
The University of Miami has engaged Slater Food Service Management to handle its food service operations starting Sept. 1, according to President Jay F. W. Pearson. Slater will serve both as management of the present cafeteria and as functional planning consultant when food service facilities are expanded by a major addition to the Student Union to be under way some time next spring. "We anticipate that with the expansion of the Student Union which will provide many more student services than our present facilities can offer, thousands more of our students than heretofore will remain on campus for leisure time recreation," Dr. Pearson said.
