Grand Avenue Widening Falls With a Thud Here

(continued from page 1) Miami said Wednesday that Douglas Road is the logical stopping place for the widening of Grand Avenue due to cost factors. He said that the portion of Grand Avenue lying west of Douglas Road and still in Miami proper is 700 feet long. The other 1,200 feet west of the Miami city limits is in the Gables and stops at South Dixie Highway. The spokesman said plans have been in the works for a year, that a public hearing was held in the Grove (with five attending) and that work is expected to start almost immediately after several delays going back to last July. Contracts have been let. He said it was his understanding that a request by a Grove civic group to continue the Grand Avenue project all the way to South Dixie Highway lies behind Reece's request for participation by the Gables. This could not be confirmed because Reece was not in his office. The spokesman said cost is considered prohibitive just now for the second section west of Douglas Road. Considering the cost to the Gables and the City of Miami for rights of way acquisition, paving and all, the cost for that additional portion would be about a half million dollars compared to about $250,000 for the whole 3-5th's of a mile to be done from Douglas Road back east to Main Highway in the heart of the Grove.

Finally (Really) Gibbys Get Buiding Go Ahead

Dr. and Mrs. John F. Gibby, 806 Parma Ave., have finally obtained their permit to build an addition next to the controversial undug canal property that abutts their home. The City Commission Tuesday voted 4-0 to grant the Gibbys a variance to build within 27 feet of the canal rather than the required 35 feet. Commissioner Franklin Evans abstained for personal reasons. The Gibbys had tried unsuccessfully for several months to get a permit to build within five feet of the property. A suit has been filed by the City to determine the ownership of the undug canal property.

Alexis B. Konohoff To Head Military Group

(Picture on Page 25) Alexis B. Konohoff, president of Kononoff and Smith Gables engineering firm, was named acting president of the new Florida post of the Society of American Military at its organizational meeting Jan. 5. Lt. Gen. Walter K. Wilson Jr., chief of engineers for the U.S. Army, was principal speaker at the meeting, held at the Coral Gables Country Club. The Jacksonville District, Corps of Engineers could become one of the busiest in the land, Gen. Wilson told the group. He cited activities at Cape Canaveral, the proposed cross-state barge canal and the South Florida flood control program as facets that will keep the engineers busy. "People in Miami are lucky," Gen. Wilson said. "They have a 15-year start in developing water resources — thanks to the work of the flood control projects." This is important for industrial development he said. Attending the meeting with Gen. Wilson were Brig. Gen. H. O. Morris, commanding the Atlanta Engineers office; Col. J. V. Sollohuo, commander of the Jacksonville Engineers office, and Burton J. Bell, SAME regional vice president employed at the Atlanta Engineers office.
