Jaycees' to Honor 3 Tonight
State Sen. Verle Pope of St. Augustine will be guest speaker at the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce DSA, Good Government and Bosses Night Banquet tonight (Thursday). Senator Pope has been a member of the State Legislature since 1948. He has three times been chosen "most valuable Senator," and in the 1961 session, was chosen "most valuable legislator." This is an annual affair staged by the Coral Gables Jaycees. It will be held at the Coral Gables Country Club at 7:30 p.m. Some 150 persons will attend. Highlights of the banquet will include the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award to a young man who has been outstanding in his service to Coral Gables. Past years winners include George Wilson, Don Cuddy and Mort Guilford. The Good Government Award is presented to someone who has contributed to the betterment of local government. Last year's winner was Miss Loretta Sheehy. Other past winners include Jimmy Robinson, Fred Hartnett and W. Keith Phillips. This year, for the first time, the David H. Hendrick Outstanding Citizen Award will be presented. The award, created in the memory of the late Mr. Hendrick, will go to a citizen over 35 years of age who has contributed most to the improvement of Coral Gables. The award is to be continued on an annual basis. Special guests of the Jaycees will include their bosses. SEN. POPE
Bert Burris' Contract Is Lengthened
A 15-month contract extension has been approved for Bert Burris, Coral Gables advertising consultant. Burris, who gets $10,000 a year for handling publicity and advertising, has indicated he will accept. The extra three months would bring his contract into line with the City's fiscal year. Expansion of the scope of Burris' work is also contemplated by the Commission.
Coffee Can Keeps Her Cookies Fresh
Miss M. P. said her mother taught her a trick of keeping cookies fresh and crisp. Pack them in a coffee can, with a paper towel in the bottom of the can and another on the top of the cookies. "They stay fresh for weeks, even in a climate like this," she said.
Grass Snake Stew? C'est Delicieuse!
PARIS — Cookbooks are considered great literature by the French. The cookbook par excellence is the "Larousse Gastronomique," now available in an English edition. It is an encyclopedia of food. Larousse is the name of the editor and library that published the official French dictionaries and encyclopedias. A little bulky as a bedside book, this new "gospel" of the food-conscious French offers some 8,500 recipes, including how to cook bear paws, roast a camel's hump, skewer cockscombs or simmer grass snakes. It also suggests 351 ways to cook eggs and contains everything known on cooking. Another French cookbook, written by a French nobleman, Nestor de la Bouteillere, gives 200 recipes to make royal dishes out of humble potatoes. Still another culinary book recently published in France treats the history of food and cooking from the time of cooking in caves. Prehistoric men, it seems, lunched on rats and fruit. It took the Chinese and the later Greeks to raise cooking to a culinary art. The Italians invented the fork, but the first toothpicks came from France — made in silver. Napoleon was the first to have his drinks on the rocks. During a campaign in the Alps he cooled his white wine on chunks of ice cut from glaciers. These and other stories of food help the French consider meals more than a biological necessity. To them the kitchen is a laboratory for experimentation of edible delights.
Abundance Overloads Designers These Days
NEW YORK — The home furnishings industry is just beginning to outgrow its imperfect past brought on by a "dilemma of abundance," according to James Marston Fitch, professor of history in the Columbia University school of architecture. Addressing the first fall luncheon of the New York Chapter of the National Home Fashions League, Prof. Fitch pointed out that designers, manufacturers and consumers have spent the last decade in a whirlpool of confusion, brought on by the fantastic technical strides of the industry. For the first time in history, designers and manufacturers have had too much to work with — too many new fibers, too many new plastics, too many new theories, too many new designs. The new design ingredients, added to traditional concepts, resulted in such an overwhelming choice that a clear design concept became impossible. The resultant confusion was passed on to the consumer, who was being ushered into a new period of design awareness, thanks to the imaginative, informative, and almost too-complete coverage provided by ever-alert editors. At present, there are indications that we are emerging from the decade of dilemma into a period of thoughtful selection. Professor Fitch illustrated the "rational and sane" approach to design by showing slides of interiors to appear in future issues of leading magazines publications. Professor Fitch pointed out that the future of the industry is indeed tense, since the current transitional stage can be expected to continue for some time. He does, however, anticipate a surge of vitality which will pull us out of the decade of dilemma and into a decade of decision. Before joining Columbia University, Prof. Fitch was architectural editor for House Beautiful.
