Barristers' Congregation From Coffee to Coffee to Mass
What began over a cup of coffee four years ago now ends over a cup of coffee. In 1957 Coral Gables attorneys Bob Brake, Joe Murphy and Al Schrader talking over coffee cups - were amazed to find how many Catholic lawyers there were in this area. Why not, the lawyers thought, get all the Catholic lawyers to attend mass and receive communion together? And then later, the lawyers thought, lend an air of informality by having breakfast and coffee to round off the morning? "We got a list of lawyers together (about 50 names) and started calling them," said Brake, "to see if they were interested. "And they were." This was the beginning of the Catholic Lawyers Society, which meets at 7:30 a.m. every first Friday at the Church of the Little Flower. Brake said the idea has made Society members realize that "we, as a group, belong to a religious community that has specific ideals. "And you're sort of getting your battery recharged, as one lawyer put it." After church, the lawyers head for breakfast at a Gables restaurant. "We just sit around and chat," Brake went on. "Just a group of lawyers getting together. "We talk about general business and gossip about other lawyers," he said laughingly. "And you get to know each other much better. It helps in the legal business - like any business - to know the men you're working with." Brake beamed. "We've even had comments from a couple of the parishioners who've said how impressed they were at all the lawyers attending mass together." They Talk Over Things at the Church
