ART TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwits Say Man, if you haven't made the Miami art scene yet, you're not in the groove. Man like there's more bread at the pad this year than ever. TRANSLATION! Like man, more swinging cats got the art bug and are hanging canvas. There's a good feeling around town these days, that people are really reacting favorably to art, galleries and artists. More people are attending exhibits, more people are questioning art and more people are covering walls with pictures. Buying is up because intellect in art pricing is up. Wonder if President Kennedy means what he says about furthering the arts with interest by our government? When in the color red, will any of our "fight-the-B-Girls" politicos, fight-a-mite for the advancement of culture and the arts in our town. The biggest blush in town. Showing Alice Wainwright a Michelangelo, Rubens or Goya nude. That Coppertone sign is a wonderful recognition of the delicate beauty of babe and friend. Winchell might say "Don't invite Wainwright and Hurwitz to the same party." Wonder if Lowe Gallery will rest on its Kress Collection laurels instead of forwarding the cause of good local artists? Every decent art book at the Miami Public Library is stamped "For Reference Only." The policy of not allowing a good book to be borrowed is unbelievable. The only books you can borrow are as old and antiquated as the policy itself. Detest the 6 to 1 showing by area galleries of female artists. Would someone please describe the payola used to gain exhibit space for the same old female names and their paintings? There are so many oa-serving artists with work that needs exposure. And when will the men with beards learn, that hair on the face doesn't automatically grow talent? Most frequently asked question: "Can you bargain the price of art with artists?" The answer is most of the time... "Yes," too bad, but it's true. Martin Hoffman, a superb artist, has his work on tour with a traveling Guggenheim Show. The Grove House, a Coconut Grove. Community Contribution to artists, is back in high gear and deserves full support. If I've held your attention to this point, and if you have views on any topic relating to art-artists, gripes or praises, send me a card and express them. REACT, and I promise your opinion will get equal space in this column.

Gables Girl Is Chosen For Pageant

A Coral Gables High School senior, Joyce Morill, was chosen Coral Gables' Junior Miss last Thursday. Joyce, 1699 Pizarro Ave., will represent the community at the Florida Junior Miss Pageant in Pensacola next month. The purpose of the pageant is to discover the nation's ideal high school senior girl and to award her and other finalists with scholarships to accredited colleges of their choice. Through the cooperation of state and local Junior Chamber of Commerces throughout the United States, the American Junior Miss Pageant has grown into a "junior" version of the Miss America contest. The following were selected as semi-finalists in the talent, sportswear and personality competition: Linda Betchtel, 1041 Almeria Ave.; Roz Friedman, 237 Velarde; Kathy Kurtz, 4375 SW 10th St.; and Faryl Sims, 921 University Dr. The remaining contestants who met the standards of eligibility for the contest were: Sandra DeFillipo, 6238 SW 50th St.; Carol Derflinger, 929 Sunset Dr.; Helen Motion, 4120 Santa Maria; Michele Pivar, 3621 SW 20th St.; Lana Ropes, 5627 Granada Blvd.; Roberta Sullivan, 600 Coral Way; and Pam Wood, 4308 University Dr. The judges were Allan Abess, Al Simpson, Mr Zachary, Julier Balogh and Mrs. Copulas.
