A 'Star' Appears in 30 Days and They Fight to Keep It

By ADELE SITKIN Correspondent The student journalists of West Miami Junior High's monthly paper, the Star, feel they'd rather die than have their paper die. And this strong attitude is felt throughout the school. The paper embraces the school in its regular features of teacher, student, and athlete of the week, human interest stories, and wit, with "earnest endeavor, imagination, ingenuity, and confidence," according to the faculty director, Mrs. David Tum- in. Mrs. Tumin, who lives at 227 Menores Ave., is a teacher of journalism and English. Speaking for the students she said, "We stress Americanism and citizenship." "The students work hard to financially support the paper," Mrs. Tumin said. "Many junior high schools have given up their paper because they could not pay their way. The most valuable lesson we've learned is the value of the dollar." Every month the paper is distributed to the third largest junior high school student body in Florida. By sponsoring school events and selling advertising to local merchants, the paper is kept out of the "red." The Gables bus terminal newsstand, Florida Power and Light, and Mimi's of Miracle Mile are some of the supporting advertisers. Chief staff members of the Star of Shari Cline, editor-in-chief, 8321 SW 32nd Ter.; Becky Harris, associate editor, 7407 SW 34th Ter.; and Henry Dube, manager, 6820 SW 27th St. In charge of the operation of the paper are the students who engage in the work as an extra - curricular activity. It is not connected with their journalism classes. The students handle the projects sponsored to support the paper. The staff produced and directed a talent show to a full house in December and themselves bought tickets to enter. They are now planning to show a recent motion picture in Technicolor for an afternoon in January, plans include the Valentine Dance, a highlight of the school year. The school, which recently completed the addition of eight classrooms to its $2.25 million plant, is growing all the time. Its enrollment is cosmopolitan in that students hail from 39 United States and 27 foreign countries including Hungary, Israel, Nova Scotia, and Trinidad. Over 100 students are from Cuba and more are entering all the time. Several of the faculty and administration, starting with the principal, reside in Coral Gables. G. Leslie Poe, 301 Fluvia Ave., principal for six years, has been a Gables resident for 12 years. Other staff members of the school from the Gables area are Mrs. Edna Ross (assistant principal in charge of guidance), Mrs. David Tumin, Mrs. Emyln Barkley, Mrs. Ruth Bunn, Wallace Firestone, John Godbold, Miss Peggy Goode, Miss Marilou Hahn, Mrs. Elizabeth Henry and Miss Patricia Martin.
