Florida Seen as It's Always Been

If Hillsborough River State Park did not have a river, it would still be one of Florida's most scenic parks. With a river to give it added charm, the park is among the state's natural beauty spots. The visitor stopping off busy 301, seven miles below Zephyrhills, recognizes the Florida as it has been since time immemorial. A tangled forest of pines, oaks, palms, and cypress grow together in unplanned harmony along with magnolia, cedar, sweet gum, and maples. Fern, air plants, and native orchids hang unmolested from the trees. The two-mile loop through the park leads to a thick hammock along the river bed, part of which has been cleared for the recreation area. The Hillsborough courses through over a rocky bottom, sometimes eddying into deep pools, flattening out into shallow stretches and then forming a series of rapids. A picturesque hanging bridge is suspended across the river near the picnicking area. A brand new recreation center and bathhouse have been built for the convenience of picnickers. Tables, picnic shelters, and grills are arranged in attractive spots throughout the area. A special area near the bathhouse has been marked for swimming in the river, and a life guard is stationed during the week end and on holidays. Swimming elsewhere in the river is not allowed. A boat dock has been built for boating enthusiasts, and a large fleet of rowboats is rented for 25 cents an hour or one dollar a day. On Sundays and holidays rentals are by the hour only. Oars are provided, but those who prefer to bring their own motors are allowed to use them. The Hillsborough makes an ideal fishing stream because of the deep gullies and holes where fish like to congregate. Black bass are the most popular of the fish caught. Campers will find the park's facilities among the best in the state. In the tent areas are 65 sites with tables, and the trailer area has 35 sites. At least 44 electrical outlets are available. Two combination restroom and showerhouses are centrally located in the camp sites. Rates are $1.50 a day, with an additional 50 cents a day for electricity. The park also charges a facility fee of 50 cents a car. In addition to the regular camp sites, Hillsborough State Park also has a Boy and Girl Scout camp located at opposite ends of the park. Many nature trails lead throughout the park, and the visitor can see as many as 209 species of birds. If he is alert, he might also see a turtle and an occasional alligator.
