WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

BASEBALL TIME: Boys from 7 to 17 in the Southwest area once again are ready for baseball! The 1962 Tropical Park Khoury League is ready to get underway. Any boy whose eighth through 17th birthday falls during 1962 is eligible to play. Executives of the League will hold registration the last two Saturdays in January, Jan. 20 and Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. It will be held at the Field House at Tropical Park baseball diamond. Each registrant must be accompanied by a parent and must show proof of date of birth. Khoury League baseball is a program that enables every boy who wants to play baseball to play. Every boy plays in every one of his team's games; no boy is ever cut from a team because of lack of ability. Executives of the Tropical Park League are parents in the area, including L. W. LeGrand, president; Al Harp, commissioner; Marty Bomse, vice president; Bud Dawson, secretary; Everett Rosenstein, treasurer. Committee heads are Phil Zelman, Al Trifone, Bob Rondeau and Gordon Einhorn. Harry Polofsky is the league's business manager. TENNIS, TOO! - The first Pro-Am Tennis Tourney to be held at the championship courts at the new Westbrooke Country Club, 8500 On The Trail, is slated for noon Sunday. Host Pro Bill Doeg will have Al Harum (Coral Gables C.C.); Steve Toth (Indian Creek); Ralph Zeach (La Gorce); Jack Cook (Salvatore Park) and George Peno, Gardnar Malloy and Bob Stubbs on hand for the tourney. By the way, the plush new Westbrooke club officially opens its facilities to members on Jan. 22 and will have its first membership dinner-dance on Sat. Feb. 3. The club - a family recreation and social facility - features the largest pool ever built in Florida, and club executives are already making plans to bring some national swimming and diving meets to this area. Club developers Sheldon Kay, Harold Pomerantz and Morris Fox are also allowing high school swim teams in the area - who do not have pools of their own - to use the "Big W" pool at the club for practice. First school to take up the generous offer was the Palmetto High swimmers. They Get Heated Up Over These Cold Days

A Coral Gables family has blown its stack over difficulty with the heating system. They've been without heat since the day after Christmas and getting their trouble fixed has necessitated getting a large hole cut in their bedroom floor. They are the John B. Cashions, of 1555 Palermo Ave., who purchased their home a little over three years ago. Everything went well as long as their oil furnace worked all right, said Mrs. Cashion, but the day after Christmas they heard an explosion which they say damaged the chimney and they've been without heat since. Although they've had several repairmen out to fix the furnace, so far they are still without heat. Howcum? - No one could get to the unit which is under the terrazzo floor. Their son, Jim, 17, risked his life several times crawling under the house trying to re-set the furnace, Mrs. Cashion said. Now repairmen tell them this was very dangerous and that two men should do the work, she said. Trouble with this is that two men couldn't get under the house to get at the trouble. So now they've had to have an access hole cut into the thick floor between a closet and bedroom. The installation was approved by the City when the home was built in 1958. City Fire Inspector Phil Sistik said he saw nothing wrong with the heating plant and that it should have operated properly had it been serviced once a year as recommended. Sistik, who was not responsible for the installation when approved, agreed that an access hole was needed and should have been incorporated in the original plans. Meanwhile, the Cashions say they hope to have heat by the next cold spell. JIM CASHION'S IN A HOLE

License Not Right, She Is Charged

A 15-year-old girl, apparently not responsible for an accident she was involved in, was charged with unauthorized use of a driver's license by Gables police Monday. Linda Mayers, of 4710 Orduna Dr., was charged by Officer Charles M. Harris in the accident that resulted in two injuries. Sally A. Benjamin, 16, of 5125 Donatello St., a passenger, was treated at Doctors' Hospital. Driver of the other car, Peter H. Mitchell, 20, a University of Miami student living at 1206 Walsh, Apt. D., was treated at Doctors' and at the University of Miami infirmary. According to Harris, Mitchell was westbound on Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Miss Mayers east on Ponce when he attempted to make a left turn at Alhambra Circle and was hit. Both cars were seriously damaged.

Newsmen Preview Lush New Westbrooke Country Club

By MAURICE LABELLE Guide Reporter Several hundred members of the press, radio and TV corps did something Sunday they don't frequently do except on business - visit a country club. It was the preview of the lush new Westbrooke on Tamiami Trail. The Westbrooke is Sheldon Kay, Morris Fox and Harold Pomerantz' dream near Westchester subdivision. A gayly made up clown greeted tots at the door, handing out candy and balloons while Gables photographer Marty Aronow clicked away for posterity. Ron Levitt, who wears many hats, doffed the one of public relations director and greeted guests as they arrived. Levitt doffs another hat on Mondays to write a column for The Guide. Once inside, guests were treated to a variety of brunch with twist, a cold dip in the huge "W" shaped pool for the hairy chested, demonstrations of fencing, judo, drinks at the upper tier cocktail and tours and... Others played softball at the spacy diamond in the southeast corner of the sprawling establishment and still others tried their hand at tennis, hand ball, and watched children enjoy themselves. All the time a combo beat out exotic rhythms which was piped everywhere. Rain threatened to break up the party, but the sun won out. Westbrooke has what most clubs don't have enough of - acres and acres of parking. But it lacks what most other clubs do have - a golf course.

Teenagers Stop Him, Beat Auto

A Miami man complained to Gables police Saturday that a group of teenagers surrounded his car and beat out two of his windows. Guillermo Argueta, of 3061 West Flagler St., told police that he was driving in the 5200 block of Riviera Drive when a boy walked out in front of his car and acted as if he'd been hurt. A group of youngsters then gathered around his car and smashed two windows on the left side of the car.
