CALL OF THE CINDERS
Coral Gables High will soon have the best high school track in Florida. Thanks to: 1,200 boys. A City of Coral Gables plumber. And parents. These people have worked hard to get the track finished by March 9, when the Cavaliers open their cinder season against Palmetto High. Though the school needs $1,600 more to finish the $3,000 project, Coach Ed Injaychock expressed the hope—tinted just a bit with pessimism — that the track would be completed. The 1,200 boys are those in the physical education class who took time out from their recreation period to clear the field of rocks so sod could be laid. The City plumber worked on his own time — without pay — one Saturday relaying hundreds of feet of pipe that had to be moved. The Booster Club, made up of parents, has given most of the money for the track. Right now, the first coat of asphalt has been laid. A second coat will go down in two weeks. In two more weeks, the track should be ready. Coach Injaychock said this will be the best high school track and second in the state only to the University of Florida because: It will feature eight lanes, not the usual six. The broad jump and pole vault will not occur in the center of the track area, which usually causes confusion, But in a 125 foot by 25 foot apron specially provided at one end of the track. Story and Photos by Raymond Lang REALLY 'PITCHING IN' to help clear the proposed track field of rocks is cinder coach Ed Injaychock. Behind him are some of the 1200 boys who helped. THE LINE UP for the rock detail starts to break up. To save the money of paying laborers to clear the track field of rocks, all the physical education students volunteered part of their recreation period to do the tedious work. AS THE STEAM ROLLER grinds its way by, these young men toss rocks into separate piles which can be easily carted off. In foreground is such a collection. THIS IS THE END, not only of our picture page, but of this rock pile. In jest, the boys whose shadows then made this make-shift cross to perhaps suggest can be seen at left tossed these rocks together and how tired they were.
