Out of Chance, Friendship and a Book That Was Published

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter O.K. Harold Machlan is 62. All right, he was a doctor for some 39 years. So if you slipped quietly into Machlan's comfortable apartment at 1008 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., would you find him relaxing in his senior years as he reclined in an easy chair? Nope. Machlan's just had his first novel published. You'd probably find him working on his next one. "It's the terrific urge to write that makes the discipline easier," Machlan said, telling how a man, retired from active business, adjusts to the task of hammering out a novel. "I can do my best work in the morning. I always could, even in the hospital. "I usually start at my typewriter about 8:30 or 9 a.m.," Machlan smiled, "when I don't think I will distract my neighbors too much." Machlan's book, "Black Veils Over Paris," tells what it was like for a couple to live in Paris under the Nazis during World War II. Irony plays a large part in allowing Machlan to write the book. In 1923, Machlan met the young man who, years later in the winter of 1960, was to tell his personal war experiences upon which the book is based. Machlan was aboard a ship on his way to do post-graduate work at the University of Vienna when he met the young Belgian, whose home was Paris. Years passed after they parted. It was 1957 and Machlan and his wife, visiting Paris, looked for the Belgian's name in the phonebook. It wasn't there. Three more years were to pass. It was now the winter of 1960 and the Machlans were again in Paris. Again they hunted through the phone book and there was the name. What followed was a friendship between the Machlans, the Belgian and his wife. After hours of listening to the Paris couple tell what they went through under the Nazis, there resulted: "Black Veils in Paris." "Writing," said Machlan, "is something you can't force . . . "I would say I pushed sometimes. Of course, you can sit there and say you're going to wait for the call and it never comes. "And sometimes," continued Machlan, who has never taken a course in creative writing, "you sit there, push the keys just a bit and it comes to you." DR. MACHLAN; WIFE'S PICTURE IS ON WALL
