TONI JENNINGS LOVES TO DRAW

In Kindergarten, Anything

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter Everything happens in a church kindergarten. Untied shoelaces. A case of mumps. The minister walking nonchalantly down the church corridor only to find his nephew sitting in the "punishment chair" outside his class. So it goes at the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables. "They're now learning the 10 Commandments and about bsaring false witness," said instructor Mrs. N. L. Master, 837 Madrid St. She looked over her flock of some 23 children at play. Some children were "horses," some "rabbits" and some just played in the sandbox. "And we teach them about letting their love shine through," the teacher laughed. "And little Jon (Carroll) that little freckled-faced boy over there with the red hat. "Well, whenever he does something good, he'll say 'I'm letting my love shine through.'" The children meet five days a week, from 9 a.m. to noon. There's chapel, when they pray and sing their own hymns, and all the crayon drawing and preparatory reading that you expect in a kindergarten. "That's little Kathy, she's a real mother," Mrs. Master, said, nodding to a cherub-faced girl, about five, and wearing high heels. Kathy did not play with the children. But every few minutes, she would grab some boy by the hand and make him sit down, telling him he should rest after playing so hard. At times more children were sitting than were playing. "She's my little helper," Mrs. Master said about Kathy. "She'll help me serve tea during our tea time (a daily kindergarten feature.) Everything does not always go smoothly. Assistant instructor Mrs. Paul Dean and a few children were out with the mumps. Children argue over whose turn it is each morning to carry the little, red football out to the playfield. Frequently, a child will say someone hit him when actually it's not so, said Mrs. Master. "And we have one form of punishment," Mrs. Master said softly, "and it's to make somene sit in a chair in the corridor. "And there's the minister's nephew and sometimes Uncle Clyde (Dr. Clyde L. Myers) might be going down the hall to get his car in the parking lot. "And he'll see Tommy (Schwartz) and he'll say 'What did you do this time?' and Tommy will say 'I was a bady boy.'"
