In the Middle Ages, He Notes, Things Were Different

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter "If a person from the Middle Ages came here and saw us today, he would think we were barbarians. "They were coming out of darkness; we may be going into it." Dr. J. A. Reynolds, a University of Miami professor of Medieval Languages and Literature, expressed this opinion last week in the den of his home at 1011 Lisbon St. He talked of the differences between persons from the Middle Ages, which dates about 500-1500, and modern man. War, for example. If two armies felt they were pretty much equal in strength, they would not chance the possibility of self-destruction, Dr. Reynolds said. Each army would pick its best fighter. The two top warriors would battle one another. The losing side, by pre-arranged agreement, would withdraw to a specified spot, perhaps beyond a mountain range or across a river. "Honor was very important in the Middle Ages," Dr. Reynolds said. Three most significant values, he said, were order, decorum and formality. "As people . . . they were exactly the same kind of people we are," Dr. Reynolds said. "Same virtues, same problems and pretty much the same of solving them. "Religion played a much larger role in a man's daily life than it does now . . . How many people today, whether he's a saint or scoundrel, get up and say their prayers in the morning, and before eating and before going to bed at night? "Our casualness," Dr. Reynolds said, pointing to another difference. "He (the Middle Age person) would see our women walking down the streets with their hair uncovered. "No respectable woman in the Middle Ages would let her hair be seen. Even in the house they wore a cap." If this is so, then what would be the reaction to a woman wearing a bikini? "Then they'd be sure we were savages," Dr. Reynolds said emphatically. Dr. Reynolds is married and has a 15-year-old son, Sherman Briggs, a ninth grader at Ponce de Leon Junior High. The UM professor recently had a book of his, "Heraldry and You," published. It's an extensive study of coats-of-arms and is available at the Gables Public Library. DR. REYNOLDS
