Local Oscar Rooter: Jack Stanly

One of the people most pleased by Monday night's Academy Awards was Gables dancing teacher Jack Stanly. An old pupil of his—Rita Moreno—was named the nation's best supporting actress for her role in the film "West Side Story." The movie, named the year's best, won nine other Oscars as well. "Wasn't it wonderful!" said Stanly in more of an exclamation that a question. Rita was a pupil of his in New York from the age of eight through 16 when she left to go to Mexico and eventually Hollywood. "I saw her about three years ago in California," said Stanly, "and she was disappointed. The critics were all saying good things about her but she couldn't seem to get a hit. "A dance she does in a candy store in 'West Side' is one of the most dramatic I've seen on the screen in years."
