For Breakfast, Meg Calls Jack in Tennessee

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor Gordon and Meg Hennon, Coral Gables residents since 1925 have hobbies — each his own. Meg is a "ham" radio licensed operator, K4-HSC, and Gordon is a lapidary. During the summer months when the couple reside in their Hiwassee, Ga., home, he hunts gems in the Carolina mountains and has his own grinding-polishing apparatus. Meg is one of 105 women in South Florida who are ham operators. They have taken the name, High School Coeds "HSC." She also has a receiving and sending set in Georgia, and has been an operator for six years. Meg received the Public Service award in 1959 when she radioed an airplane crash in the Canal Zone. The pilot in a private plane was near death. Her calling saved his life. The Hennons reside in a neat white bungalow on Alberca Avenue. They came here in 1925, and Mr. Hennon owned and operated two barber shops. He knew the first mayor of the Gables. They have one son, Gordon Jack, an electrical engineer, who lives in Tullahoma, Tenn. He also is a "ham" operator. Every morning at eight o'clock the Hennons call Jack and over coffee and breakfast they talk. "Better than a letter," says Meg. Meg has her setup in the kitchen, a spotless large room all in white which takes in the former dining room, now the breakfast area. She turned on her sets, and made her "pitch" and it wasn't but a minute until she had a receiver. She talked to Alexandria, Va., and gave this reporter a thrill to be talking to some-one in the town in which she had lived. He was Dean Morgan, practically a newcomer who works in the Chamber of Commerce there. The traffic is terrific; there are too many autos and he is ready to leave, he said. Alexandria is seven miles from Washington, D.C. Meg is versatile. She makes all her own clothes, has a garden, both vegetables and flowers. Tangerine and avocado trees flourish. Her red roses could take a prize. Jack, their son, graduated from Ponce de Leon High School and the University of Miami. He taught a year, then returned to his alma mater for his master's degree. He tested the Glenn capsule just before the famous flight. When the Hennons leave for their summer home (six months each) they take down their oversized antenna, which practically covers their roof. It is stored in the living room and extends from the front door to the kitchen to escape possible hurricane damage. And in case you wonder how many ham operators there are licensed, Meg has a volume as big as the phone book with everyone listed. MEG HENNON AT HER SET

Memo to Jack Gordon, Dade County Board of Public Instruction

Dear Jack: Gee Whiz! Dante must be running a well heeled campaign to turn down a five hundred dollar contribution. I know a lot of candidates, including yours truly who could stand just a five buck contribution from their friends. I don't suppose you'd consider giving the 5Cs to the American Legion or the DAR or even the undersigned. Breathlessly awaiting your reply, AL SCHRADER, GOP nominee for State Legislature P.S. It's a sneaky thought, but did you two cook up this $500 bit? PAID POL. ADV.
