MRS. SAUNDERS
At Chamber of Commerce Lost Husbands? Siam? Bandages? Just a Day's Work
"Is there AC or DC current in Siam?" "How do I find the Seminoles in the Everglades?" "I can't find my parked car. And my husband's asleep in it!" Questions like these pop at you every second when you work at the Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Joseph Saunders, office manager, laughed as she recalled the question about the kind of current in Siam. "That's one that stuck in our minds beucase it's so far-fetched. Actually, as I recall, we found out. I called some Army or Air Force base." Mrs. Saunders, a petite lady with a perpetual smile, has worked at the Chamber since March, 1946. In that time, she's run into all sorts of questions. "A woman came running in one day and she said she couldn't find her parked car," Mrs. Saunders said the woman became very excited. "I've got to find it right now ... my husband's asleep in there." At another time, an irate man from out-of-town wrote the Chamber a letter. Seems he fell asleep in his parked car on Miracle Mile. He got slapped with an overtime parking ticket two minutes before he woke up. "Somebody came in once for a bandage," Mrs. Saunders went on, "and we get quite a few questions about the library. It's hard for them to find." People are always dropping in, asking where certain streets are, the Youth Center, the University of Miami and other spots. Letters? A man from Brooklyn wrote "How safe are your homes from blizzards?" A woman named Josephine wrote from Massachusetts, "Would you kindly send me all the information you may have on my enjoying my honeymoon in Coral Gables?" Perhaps the best was from a man, whose writing was very shaky. He sent the Chamber a poem. It's title was "Words of Teen-age Girls. Before the gent signed his name, he kindly informed our Chamber they could, if they so desired, buy his poem.

Red-Bird Intersection Will Be Straightened
Red-Bird intersection — one of the most hazardous in Dade because of misalignment — will be straightened out by Metro, the City of Coral Gables learned Tuesday. The day before (Monday) a woman was injured in an accident there when an eastbound car failed to bear right and struck a tree in the middle of the island. An airine stewardess was killed there about a year ago and there have been numerous accidents which resulted after the Gables removed a massive entrance marker there. The marker had been smashed into repeatedly. Commissioners Tuesday bemoaned the loss of several trees, but went along with Metro's plans after hearing from City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. about the hazards. Jackie Procter, 18420 NW 23rd Ave., was treated at Doctors' Hospital following the accident shortly after midnight Monday. She was a passenger in a car driven by Julius Hamilton, 48, of 1846 NW 37th St. Hamilton was charged with driving without a valid license by Officer Harry Prucell who investigated. Damage to the car was estimated at $350.

OLD Mr. BOSTON YOU'RE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE IF YOU'RE NOT DRINKING 80 PROOF GIN!
If you think higher proof means higher quality — that's a mistake. If you think you have to pay more money to get a better gin — that's a mistake. If you think the gin the English drink is more than 80 proof — that's a mistake. You should know, to begin with, that America is the only civilized country in the world that drinks high-proof gin. The British, who perfected gin, wouldn't think of it! They know that gin has an ideal taste and flavor balance at a milder, smoother 80 proof. Here's the whole story: 80 PROOF GIN TASTES BETTER "Proof" is no measure of quality. It's a measure of alcohol content alone. (100 proof means 50% alcohol.) Alcohol itself has no flavor. The pleasant taste of gin comes entirely from the herbs with which it's distilled. The best test of gin is to drink it straight or on-the-rocks. You'll find 80 proof gin has the big taste advantage of 80 proof mildness — with the same full flavor of higher proof gins. 80 PROOF GIN COSTS LESS Gins are taxed by the U.S. on their proof or alcohol content, only. The lower the proof — the lower the taxes, and the lower the cost to you. When you buy an imported label, you add the cost of shipping and duties. That pushes the price even higher, without giving you 80 proof quality. 80 PROOF GIN MAKES BETTER MARTINIS It makes them extra dry, as you like them, but not extra strong. Twenty years ago, the 3-to-1 Martini was standard. Today, with the trend to dryer Martinis, they're made 6-, 7-, even 8-to-1. As a result the modern Martini has climbed from a smooth 76.5 proof to an overwhelming 84 proof! Solution? Mix with 80 proof gin. It gives you the same full, dry gin flavor, but it returns the Martini to its original, more moderate proof. 80 PROOF GIN MAKES BETTER TALL DRINKS When you mix a tall drink, like a collins or a gin 'n tonic, you dilute the strength of the gin "to taste." You also mix for balance of flavor. 80 proof gin will give you better balance. You don't have to drown it to drink it. HOW TO MAKE DRY MARTINIS MAKE MORE SENSE | Using Standard 36 Proof Dry Vermouth | Using 90 Proof Dry Gin | Using 80 Proof Dry Gin (or Vodka) 3-to-1 (Traditional) | 76.5 Proof | 69.0 Proof 5-to-1 (Dry) | 81.0 Proof | 72.6 Proof 8-to-1 (Extra Dry) | 84.0 Proof | 75.1 Proof (The "standard" proof for today's bottled Martinis is a moderate 67.5 proof!) OLD MR. BOSTON IS THE FINEST GIN YOU CAN BUY It's vacuum distilled at an unusually low temperature in special glass-lined stills. Only at such a low temperature, is it possible to capture the most delicate essence of the herbs. This is one reason for Old Mr. Boston's flavor distinction. It is America's first and largest-selling 80 proof Dry Gin! "INTELLIGENCE IN THE PURCHASE... MODERATION IN THE ENJOYMENT." Old Mr. Boston 80 PROOF GIN DISTILLED FROM 100% GRAIN NEUTRAL SPIRITS. MR.
