How the UN Would Destroy the U.S.: His View

(Editor's Note: The author of the following is a local attorney who maintains that the United Nations Charter "is destroying and will continue to destroy the freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution." He asked to write several articles giving his views.) By GERARD PUCCI In order to know the diabolical nature of the U.N. Charter we should know the God - inspired qualities of the U.S. Constitution. This is so because the provisions of the U.N. Charter are directed to destroy the principles and philosophy of the U.S. Constitution. In order to fully know an evil, we should know the good that the evil will destroy. Therefore in this article we will first examine the history of our U.S. Constitution. In succeeding articles, I will always present a particular part of the Constitution and its principles - and will then present the corresponding part of the U.N. Charter. It is not by accident that we the people of the United States live under a Constitution dedicated to the "rights of man." Man's eternal quest has been freedom - freedom from government, freedom from government oppression and government compulsion. The drafters of our Constitution understood the lessons of English history which taught the possibility of oppression through misrule of kings and of parliaments. The story of our Constitution begins in June 15, 1215, in England when King John of England was forced at the point of the sword, to sign the Magna Carta. By this document, it was established that the arbitrary power of the king is limited by written restrictions. Four hundred years passed after the Magna Carta, during most of which time, the peoples' rights were again willfully disregarded. Then on June 7, 1628, Charles I, was forced to sign the Petition of Rights. By this document, it was established that taxes were to be levied only with consent of Parliament, and that martial law cannot be declared in times of peace. Parliament, accomplished this when it refused to vote any money for the operation of the King's government. Charles I, violated these rights and was beheaded. Then in 1689, Parliament elected William and Mary who approved the Bill of Rights. This document established the right of free speech, the right of the people to bear arms, and the right to free elections. The framers of the Constitution were all familiar with the principles of these documents and they were familiar with the abuses by the governments that made these documents necessary. The Founding Fathers knew the principles of John Locke, who in 1690 wrote that government must be the impartial agency, only to protect man's natural rights of life, liberty and property, and that 'the state was to be the servant of the people, not the master. And that the general welfare was promoted by restricting the authority of the government over the individual. They were familiar with the principles of Baron de Montesquieu, who in 1765 wrote that liberty could exist only when the power of the government was restricted and limited. They were familiar with the principles of William Blackstone who in 1765 wrote that, "The principal aim of society is to protect individuals in the enjoyment of the absolute rights which were vested in them by the immutable laws of nature." This, then is the background of experiences and learning from which our Constitution was drawn. In addition to this, the 13 states - under the form of colonies, were experimenting with written constitutions for 180 years, from 1607, the date of the first settlement in Virginia, to the birth of the Constitution of Sept. 17, 1787.

OFF BEAT

by Maurice Labelle "Thank God for television . . ." the words of Richard M. Nixon still reverberated around America when our sister media landed a blockbuster on our former vice president and recent California gubernatorial candidate that made any press attack on him pale by comparison. Nixon's own bitter attack on the U.S. press and California papers in particular. still had newsmen rednecked when Howard K. Smith demonstrated just how fair and impartial the television camera can be. To have a convicted liar presented as legitimate critic on a national program appears to be the height of irresponsibility. When you couple this incident with the Newburgh, N.Y., welfare program presentation of several months ago, it leaves a few of us thankful that we have more than one media. And Mr. Nixon is undoubtedly having some second thoughts about the objectivity of TV. -ML- Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's death last week was the source of great sorrow to her admirers and perhaps a perverted joy to her enemies. Few are indifferent about the former First Lady. Whatever our feelings, she certainly left her mark. Though I disagreed with many of the things she did, and she was obviously being used by several different groups to support programs that were beneath the dignity of a presidential widow, she did have a certain charm that ingratiated her to those who knew her. A group of us had the opportunity to sit down and talk with her at the University of Miami several years back. Her appearance of a snobbish, high society matron was quickly dispelled as she mixed freely with students and others. Without hesitation, she discussed knowledgeably the problems of the world.. Even in disagreement, you couldn't but help admire the articulate fortright manner with which she discussed various subject matter introduced by the group. Her soft attitude toward enemies is what subjected her to such vituperative attacks. Unfortunately, the leadership on both sides of the Cold War is not soft and need exists for strong voices to keep us from the unconditional surrender we demanded of our defeated enemies of WW II.
