on the Town shred of shyness
THEATER COATS that look sheer luxury but actually have secret, built-in practicality are taking front-row seats this season. In glittering brocades and matelasse of Celanese fibers, they shine on evenings when heavy furs deserve a night off and cloth coats ought to be stay-at-homes. These coats can be worn to a country club dance, to a large party, or for a night on the town—with or without theater. The coats are really coats, too; they are laminated with Scott Apparel foam so they will hold their shape and they are warm enough to take you straight through the round of late fall and winter entertaining. And you can choose a short, cocktail-length coat or a long one that sweeps to—or almost to—the floor. Some of the coats come with matching dresses, and all of them will make a dramatic entrance at any party. Shown here are three of the new designs modeled by Broadway stars Margaret Leighton of "Night of the Iguana," Sheree North of "I Can Get It for You Wholesale," and Sandy Dennis of "A Thousand Clowns." Top left: Margaret Leighton wears a golden taupe dress and theater coat designed by Vera Maxwell in Bloomsburg's matelasse. The new long-length skirt sweeps from a plain bodice that can highlight a necklace or pin. $295 Bottom left: Beige brocade by Opulent is the fabric of this Mort Schrader design modeled by Sandy Dennis. The coat, also with a matching dress, has a face-framing stand-away collar. $125 Opposite page: A double-breasted, demi-fitted evening coat, worn by Sheree North, is designed by PRL in gold-threaded brocade by Opulent. The coat has a high-rising bouffant waist that conceals roomy side pockets. $70 These coats are available at fine shops throughout the country. We will be glad to supply the names of the ones nearest you on request. Please address Fashion Editor, SUBURBIA TODAY, 60 East 56 St., New York 22, N.Y. Suburbia Today, November 1962 39
