Olive, a Mother of 8, Helps Bale Hay on Their Mountain Ranch
By JUNE GRAY Women's Editor A Coral Gables mother with eight children finished her summer ranch life last week by helping her husband bale hay at their Lookout Mountain Ranch where they operate two camps for boys and girls. Jack and Olive Jones, 1100 S. Greenway Dr., have 5,000 acres situated on the edge of Lookout Mountain near Cloudland, Ga. Camp Cloudmont for boys has 2,000 acres; Valley View Ranch for girls covers 500 acres. The remaining acreage is used for grazing and timberland. Every spring when school is over, they close their 32-room house here and move the family to the ranch. For eight weeks, they are responsible for 75 girls and 120 boys ranging from eight to 18 years of age. Several other groups rent the camp for one and two week periods. "I have always been kept busy being the business manager and bookkeeper," Olive commented, "but this year my mother-in-law went along and she did a lot of the office work giving me time to go camping, hunting and hiking." "When the season was over, we had to get in enough hay to feed our 150 horses and we were short on help. So I drove a truck while Jack helped pitch hay." For the first time, Olive had an opportunity to go hunting. She got two doves with one shot, but had trouble because she sighted with the wrong eye. The people there were very concerned over the Cuban situation. "People were fleeing to the caves," Olive said. "Bulldozers were used to make roads up the mountainside to four big caves, and one family moved into the basement of their house." "But Jack and I decided that we would be as safe at home as anywhere else, so we came back." The Jones have been running the camp for 18 years. Their last two children, Gary, four, and Angela, 13 months, were born there. Their oldest son, Jack Jr., is a sophomore at University of Florida. Nancy, 17, is a senior at Coral Gables Senior High and Oliver, 16, a junior. Marsha, 12; Janis, 10; and Michael, 9, got to St. Theresa. "Gary is the temperamental one, Mrs. Jones said. He is not like any of our other children. He is also a good hiker." Nancy is the chief cook at home. She and Jack Jr. are paid for the work they do at the ranch each summer. Jack cares for the horses. "But the other children are not bribed, as I call it," Olive said, "to do their chores. I do not believe in it. We are all a part of the family and each one should contribute his part." One of the summer jobs Jack Sr. had while going to college was helping Ross Allen at his Reptile Institute at Silver Springs. He milked venom from rattlesnakes. Olive said her husband would not pick up a snake now, and when he looks back upon his job he does not know how he ever did it. Janis and Marsha are the "horsewomen" of the family. Both will ride in the South Miami Horse Show Thanksgiving. Janis was named reserve champion of the Summer Circuit at a banquet held Saturday of last week. In their last two shows, they won eight ribbons, five trophies and a silver platter. "We do things together," this petite five-foot mother said. RELAXING in the living room of their 32-room house located at 1100 S. Greenway Dr., are Mrs. Jack Jones and her two youngest children, Gary, four, and Angela, 13 months. The Jones have six other children. -Times Photo by RAYMOND LANG
