Deaths in the Gables
Brothers Survive Mary T. Wood
Services were held for Mary T. Wood, 44, of 215 Salamanca Ave., in Dublin, Ga. She died Nov. 7. She came here 14 years ago from Jacksonville, and is survived by three brothers, Tom, Nelson, and Millard, Newport News, Va.
Brokerage Head Of Miami Firm
Services were held yesterday (Wednesday) for Henry W. Link Jr., Miami manager of the stock brokerage firm of A. M. Kidder Company. He died Monday. He came here 38 years ago from Hickory, N.C. and lived at 701 Camilo. He was a member of the executive committees of both the American Bankers Insurance Co., and Gulf-Atlantic Towing Co., Jesters Court 88 of the Mahi Shrine and the Miami Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife, Aileen; a daughter, Eileen, and a son, Henry (Bill).
CG Carpenter Was Pa. Native
Clarence E. Pournelle, 57, 2271⁄2 Phonetia Ave., died Nov. 7. Services were held Nov. 10 in Philbrick's Chapel. He came here 20 years ago from Harrisburg, Pa., and was a maintenance carpenter for the Coral Gables Public Works Department. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Edna Ewing, Parkersburg, W. Va., and a daughter, Mrs. Dianne O. Kmoch, Baltimore.
Services Today For Minn. Native
Services will be held at 8 p.m. today (Thursday) in Van Orsdel Chapel for James E. Olson, 77, of 529 Alcazar Ave. He died Tuesday. He came here 15 years ago from Minneapolis and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife Laura; two sons, Donald and Gordon; two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice E. Martyn and Mrs. June Denight; one sister, two brothers, and seven grandchildren.
Retired Teacher Was Ala. Native
Services for Lillie B. Emmons, 64, of 625 San Lorenzo Ave., will be held in Monroeville, Ala. She died Tuesday. A retired school teacher, she came here from Silverhill, Ala. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Fannie L. Benjamin, and a brother, Isaac Emmons.
Ex-Store Owner, Harpe, 68, Dies
Retired variety store owner, Alonzo S. Harpe, 68, died Monday. Funeral services were held yesterday (Wednesday) in Van Orsdel Mortuary. He was the owner of variety stores in Coconut Grove, Miami and Little River until his retirement five years ago. Mr. Harpe came here 27 years ago from Augusta and lived at 600 San Lorenzo Ave. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables, American Legion, Masons and Shriners. Surviving are his wife, Cora; a son, Rodney S., a daughter, two brothers, two sisters and five grandchildren.
Flying Pioneer's Funeral Unset
Funeral arrangements are still incomplete for aviation pioneer, Leo L. Wassenberg, 55, who was killed last week in a plane crash in Taiz, Yemen. He had been a pilot for 38 years. Mr. Wassenberg, who lived at 2109 Granada Blvd., was employed by the John Mecom Oil Co. of Houston. He had been in Yemen about three weeks. The company told his son, Ronald, also a pilot, it would inform him when the body could be returned to the United States. Mr. Wassenberg recently completed Operation Medfly in Dade. He was one of the first aviators to fly the U.S. mail and had flown for TWA, Mid-Continent and United Airlines. He was one of the founders of the Air Line Pilots Association and a member of the OX-5 Club. In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sally Ann and Mrs. Daniel King; another son, Richard, and four grandchildren.
DR. AND Mrs. Thomas W. Hill
DR. AND Mrs. Thomas W. Hill, missionaries from San Jose, Costa Rica, will speak to the congregations of University Baptist Church at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. services on Sunday. Dr. Hill, a native of South Carolina, is a graduate of Furman University and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was appointed in 1956 and he and his family are on their first furlough.
Name Change
The West Miami Rotary Club is looking for a new name. Its members have decided to expand the area covered by the club to include the area bounded by Tamiami Trail, Red Road, Miller Road and the west. Got any suggestions for a name for the 18 square mile area?
Jaycee Dinner Is Saturday
Coral Gables Jaycee Auxiliary is having a Progressive Dinner Saturday night. Cocktail will be served at six o'clock at the home of Jane and Dick Booth, 1509 Mantua. Salad and a steak and potato dinner will be served from 7-9 at the home of Betsy and Larry Adams, 1416 Mendavia. The evening's activities will end with dessert and cards at the home of Joan and Jim Durham, 1421 Baraco. The public is invited and reservations can be made with Lee Helsey at 235-7954.
