No 'Vast Barn' for SM Methodists

Almost a half-century old with roots going back 1914, First Methodist Church of South Miami will break ground Nov. 25 for its $347,000 sanctuary. The sanctuary is just one chapter in the growth of a church which started in a one-story frame building, lighted by kerosene lamps and proud of its membership of six. Today, the church where Red Road meets Ponce de Leon Boulevard has a membership of 1,700 and property valued at $750,000, said its pastor, Dr. Ralph B. Huston. "It will be a real landmark," Dr. Huston said, speaking about the tower to be atop the new sanctuary, "visible up and down Red Road and Ponce for some distance. "It will be mounted by a cross and will be illuminated at night." Dr. Huston was particularly pleased about the cloisters (arched covered walkways) which will fringe the sanctuary. "I think these cloisters" Dr. Huston said, "will add a sense of friendliness and warmth. DR. HUSTON "It's not going to be a vast barn of a building, but warm, friendly, intimate, sheltered." Dr. Huston, pastor at First Methodist since 1957, felt the church owes a great deal to its building committee. "Particularly Ed Harris, the chairman," Dr. Huston continued, "seeing it through endless committee meetings, late hours at night." First Methodist has been at its present location since 1948. Its old chapel seats 350; the new sanctuary will double this figure. The exterior of the church will be of a modified Mediterranean design which will match the existing buildings. The roof will be of clay barrel tile. The altar will be of white marble. Behind this will be a key stone dossal topped by a 21-foot cross. A history of sacrifice and growth underlies the story of First Methodist. Quite by coincidence, there have been three major years in First Methodist's history. In each, the month — as chance would have it — was November, the month of Thanksgiving. It all began in Nov., 1914, when lay minister, Dr. C. J. Ericson, and six persons held services in a tiny frame building. South Miami was not even a city back then; it was called Larkins. In 1923, the mebership rose to 70 and First Methodist built for a new $20,000 church. Years passed. First Methodist grew. It was 1948, again November, when First Methodist broke ground for its new church at Red Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard. It's membership stood at 390. Since 1914, First Methodist has grown from the humble beginnings of a frame structure admadst pine trees to a point where it's now preparing for a new santuary Nov. 25. Appropriately, a blue-bound book outlining First Methodist's history has at the lower right corner this verse from Mark 9:23: ". . . all things are possible to him that believeth."
