Orchid Fancier Says It's Like 'Incurable Disease'; She Has 300 Growing

Growing orchids is like an incurable disease, according to Mrs. Mollie Bush, whose house and yard are filled with so many orchids that it looks as if the orchids own the residence and Mrs. Bush and her niece are interlopers. "I just love to see things grow," says this gray-haired lady who came here 41 years ago from Georgia. She refused to have an oak tree bulldozed out in her back yard which was in the workers' way when they built her present house in 1941 at 1190 S. Alhambra Cir. "It ruined my back steps, but I could not bear to see it go," Mrs. Bush declared. "Two years ago, all the trees in my back yard were flattened by hurricane Donna. I had them straightened, but lost five anyway. The others now bend toward the west because the storm came from the southeast." When Mrs. Bush decided to build on South Alhambra, she purchased 10 lots. "The entire area was nothing but scrub palmettoes and rocks. I thought I was really living out in the country where I would able to see nothing but pine trees the rest of my life. But I reckoned without thinking about expansion." An architect drew the plans for her Dobie stone house, but Mrs. Bush built it with day labor without a contractor. It was during the war when supplies and carpenters were hard to get. She did not have anyone do her landscaping. She and her yardman James have done everything. "I just worked as the spirit moved me," she said. "I don't know what I would do without James." She drew the plans for her lily pond and James did the construction. Her backyard is filled with oaks, a fish tail palm, a Panama red ginger plant, a South African Acacia, a black sapoto, a golden coconut, and 300 orchids. "It use to be a standing joke in the community that my orchids went to all the parties," Mrs. Bush laughed. She started growing orchids like everyone else she knows. A friend gave her two for Christmas and they grew on her. She has been a member of Fairchild Gardens almost since it was established in 1941. She is also a member of the Orchid Society and South Miami Garden Club. Mrs. Bush use to travel quite a bit in South America, Hawaii and Panama. Now she says she does most of her sightseeing through the National Geographic magazine. It is cheaper. Her last trip to Connecticut resulted in an abscessed tooth, and she has been going to the dentist since she returned home last week. -Times Photo by RAYMOND LANG MRS. MOLLIE BUSH . . . the hobbiest
