Voters May Decide On Urban Renewal
The problem of urban renewal in Coral Gables may be going to a referendum-depending on City Commission and Metro action in the next few weeks. Commissioners Tuesday discussed the problem at a conference without coming up with any concrete solution to the long standing Negro slum problem they have promised to lick. City Attorney Ted Simple, following talks with Metro officials, told the City Commission Tuesday that Metro now favors letting the separate municipalities set up their own urban renewal programs. But Semple feels that a charter revision would be necessary to permit the City to accomplish it. Meanwhile, however, the Federal Government has indicated that it prefers to deal with as few government bodies as possible. No action can be taken until the matter is brought up again at a regular meeting.
Mr. D's Biggest Taxpayer
Who's got the biggest residential tax bill? If you guessed Coral Gables' own Arthur Vining Davis - you're right. Davis' $8,026 bill is way ahead of the runner up, Mrs. Eleanor Jennings, who pays $6,459, according to Tax Assessor Tommy Blount. The elderly multi-millionaire's 39.18-acre home site at 9555 Old Cutler Road is valued at $607,850. The Jennings' 58-acre property, valued at $485,650 on the tax books, is located at 11901 Old Cutler Rd. The Jennings property, although much larger, Blount pointed out, is partly below the highly valued ridgeland area and the home is older.
Fur Robbery
More than $1,700 in clothing was stolen from Adrian Thal Inc., 350 Miracle Mile, in a break sometime early Monday, according to Coral Gables police. The store's alarm system failed to ring, police said.

More Space For Autos
Use of four Douglas Road lots for off-street parking for the Gulf Oil Building was approved by the City Commission Tuesday. The lots are located north of Giralda Avenue. Ed Rogers, owner of the new seven-story office building, had requested permission to use the lots to furnish additional parking as required for the 10,000 square foot seventh story addition. One space is required for each additional 600 square feet. Seventeen spaces were needed. The new lot will park an estimated 26 cars. No variance was needed in the C-2 commercial zoning.
