Drives on Campus To Be Sealed Off

Effective Sunday, Oct. 1, the sections of Miller Drive and University Drive which run through the center of the University of Miami main campus will be closed permanently to through traffic. Miller Drive will be blocked at two points: On the west at San Amaro Drive where Miller Drive runs east to the Student Union. On the east, where Miller Drive intersects with University Drive in front of the Student Union. Cars may drive east on Miller to the parking lot and service entrance to the Student Union and west on Miller past the Lowe Art Gallery to a turnaround at the University Drive and Miller intersection University Drive will dead end at Miller Drive. Coral Gables buses will continue to service the campus with bus stops scheduled along the following route: From Doctor's Hospital on University Drive, left on Pisano Avenue to Granada Boulevard, right on Granada to Ponce de Leon Boulevard, south on Ponce to San Amaro where they will turn right, following the perimeter of the campus to Campo Sano. They will proceed on Camp Sano, through the UM parking lot to University Drive, then north on University into Coral Gables. Physical Plant Director John J. O'Day pointed out that eliminating automobile traffic in front of the Student Union will provide greater safety for the thousands of students on their way to classes.

To Be a Student, You Need To Know Parking Ins & Outs

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter The days of laissez faire driving and parking are over at the University of Miami. University officials have come up with a list of motor vehicle regulations that resemble a Congressional bill. Coupled with City of Coral Gables restrictions, Metro (County laws) and state laws the new restrictions appear formidable for the new student. If you haven't already done so obtain a $5 parking registration fee in the Ashe Administration Building. For this you will get a windshield sticker. Another auto inspection sticker is required by the county which costs 75 cents each, six months. You may obtain these at the inspection station at Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Le Jeune Road. If you have children in school or earn money, you must also obtain Florida license plates. The City of Coral Gables polices UM parking lots and issues its own tickets. These are $1 on first offense except $3 for prohibitive parking or driving on sidewalks or parking at street obstacles. If you violate a traffic law, you will be subject to state law and Metro ordinances. Tickets are issued by all law enforcement bodies including campus police. You may face school punishment in addition to that received in court. Last, but not least, are special dean's tickets. These may lead to expulsion from the university. The speed limit on Campus is 15 miles per hour except where posted otherwise. You must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
