MARRIED STUDENTS have become commonplace in today's student bodies. About one of every five students in college today is married. At UM, there is, as in most schools, a shortage of housing for married students. The University has 163 units available and a waiting list of hundreds.

Marine Lab Tinkers with Sharks, Finds an Old Saw Is Outdated

The University of Miami is credited with having one of the finest marine laboratories in the world. It is said to be the only one in the world located on tropical waters. One of the projects underway to further its worldwide leadership in the field of marine sciences is that headed by Margaret Biggerstaff, assistant to the director. As the executive secretary of the International Oceanographic Foundation, her mission is to make Miami the world center of oceanographic studies. The objective of this foundation is to promote the study of marine sciences, conduct research for education and industry and educate the public to the unlimited possibilities offered by the oceans for the survival of mankind. They also publish a quarterly magazine, "Sea Frontiers" and a monthly pamphlet, "Sea Secrets." One of the most interesting projects presently in progress at the lab is headed by Dr. Warren Wisby. Dr. Wisby is conducting experiments with sharks to determine how they communicate so effectively. Subhead Theories Discounted His experiments discount the popular theory that sharks are alerted by the smell of blood in the water. At one time a boat from the Marine Lab went out to sea and poured several buckets of blood into the water and not a single shark showed up. Mainly he has been working on the shark's sense of hearing. The commotion caused by a person swimming on top of the ocean, a sound alien no doubt to what sharks customarily hear in their marine habitat might also bring them to the attack.

2 Sought On Charge Of Assault

Warrants have been issued for two men who allegedly beat and robbed a Coral Gables man Sept. 20 after an all-night drinking bout. The victim, Matthew S. Kulchin, of 29 Navarre Ave., suffered a head wound when his assailants reportedly bound and gagged him and slugged him after they stole his clothes and money in his apartment and left in his car, Capt. E. H. McGough, of the Coral Gables police, said. Kulchin, unable at first to recall the name of one of the men whom he had known earlier at the University of Miami, later identified him as John Twomey, 25, no address given. His companion was identified from police files as Richard Edward Lucier, 26, no address given. The men, reported to be in the New Orleans area, are charged with armed robbery, auto theft, and assault with intent to commit murder.
