Other Schools Watch Teaching Revolution Launched at UM

A new lecture hall incorporating the most revolutionary audio-visual aids to education was opened on the campus this fall. Known as the University College Building, it houses most of the classrooms for freshmen and sophomores. One of the features of this new concept in college teaching is a closed circuit TV network with its studio right in the building. This allows an instructor to arrange for material in advance and merely push a button to set it in motion. TEN-FOOT SCREEN-sb There is also a huge 10-foot projection screen with the machine for it encompassed in a pit removed from view. All of the equipment in this new building is concealed from view. The instructor also has an electric console at his fingertips to control light and sound level in the room or switch from using TV projection to one of the other media perhaps a slide or opaque. Advantages Many-sh Aside from these mechanical advantages, first and second year students in this new University College program will have the advantage of small seminar groups, in which they will have the advantage of teaching by senior professors and department heads. Particular stress will be laid in giving the students a strong background in the humanities subjects. From time to time there will be prominent statesmen and journalists invited to address the students. Top lecturers-sh It is hoped to give the students further insight into what they are studying by bringing them into contract with top men who's specialized knowledge in those fields can have its full impact on them. The concept of such a program and its installation at the University is the result of much work and research by President Jay F. W. Pearson and Vice President C. Doren Tharp. It is the first program of its type in any college or university and has already won much acclaim among American educators who are predicting much success for those who are pioneering in it at UM.

Last Rites

Services for Mrs. Elizabeth G. Norris, 2114 Granada Blvd., were held Tuesday. Cremation followed. Mrs. Norris, who came here 16 years ago from Tampa, died Saturday. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and the Miami International Airport Officer's Wives Club. Survivors include her husband, Cmdr. C. R. Norris; two sons, Capt. C. R. Norris Jr., USN, and Col. W. A. Norris, USAF; and six grandchildren.

TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK From now on, Gables residents will be surcharged one dollar amonth for the newly-established garbage removal service. Robert W. Smith, has been re-elected president of the Coral Gables Real Estate Board. The Police Department announces that 3,342 Driver's Licenses have been issued to residents and 2,196 cars have been inspected for the year. Gables Jaycees, have recently included in their resolutions to the state legislature, one for a uniform state Driver's License law.
