He then took graduate work at the University of Chicago, obtaining his MS in 1925 and his PhD. in chemistry in 1927. Dr. Muskat remained at the University of Chicago as a faculty member until 1934. During this period he served as director of chemical exhibits at the Century of Progress Exposition, where he met and formed a lasting friendship with Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson, UM president. After further study as a national research fellow at the Rockefeller Institute, Dr. Muskat served for a year as director of refining research for the Gulf Oil Corporation, then became research director for the Columbia Chemical division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, from 1936 to 1942. In 1942 he organized and became president of the Marco Chemical Company of Linden, N.J., which he headed until it was sold to the Celanese Corporation of America in 1953. Dr. Muskat stayed with the purchasing company in an advisory capacity for several years. In 1955, Dr. Muskat came to Miami to retire from active business, but continued his association with a number of industries in New York, Detroit and Chicago. It was not long before he organized the Elkin Chemical Company, on UM's South Campus, to do research in synthetic resins and plastics. In 1959 he sold his company's patent rights to the Texas Butadiene and Chemical Corporation. During World War II, Dr. Muskat was actively engaged in classified work for the U.S. government.
