University Adds 62 Profs

The University of Miami has 62 new faculty members according to Dr. C. Doren Tharp, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. The total number of faculty will remain approximately the same this year, with most of the new members replacing those who have retired, resigned or taken leaves of absence. There are 16 new members in the College of Arts and Sciences, 12 in University College, 11 in the School of Medicine, nine in Engineering, eight in the Institute of Marine Science, four in Education and two in Business. A leading advertising executive, Edward J. Lauesen, will serve as a lecturer in marketing. He was director and chairman of the executive committee of Waldi and Briggs, Inc., Illinois advertising agency. Among the newcomers will be Dr. Seymour Bernstein, research physicist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory since 1944, who has been appointed professor of physics. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, were he later served as research associate.

Singing Hurricanes Home After 7 Weeks in Europe

University of Miami's Singing Hurricanes are back at school after a whirlwind seven-week tour that took them through four European countries. Four Coral Gables and one South Miami students were among the 19 who accompanied UM Choral Director Glenn Draper on the tour of West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. They are Barry Bobst, of South Miami, and Judy Idema, [?]ott McDonald, Bob Cupp and Glenda Dell, of Coral Gables. The group performed at churches, concert halls, schools and military installations in the countries visited. Since their arrival, the group has already resumed local appearances, including one at the Coral Gables Country Club.

New Business Dean

Dr. Clark E. Myers is the new Dean of the School of Business Administration and Professor of Management at the University of Miami. Dr. Myers, a member of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration faculty, joined the UM administration this summer. Dean Myers brings to his new position at UM teaching and administrative experience gained at home and abroad. A native of Kansas, he obtained his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Kansas. He holds his doctorate, D.S.C., from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
