with Ed Knight LET ME say here and now at I'm not a joiner. I never have belonged to any civic organizations, although I secretly am pleased that I have been asked to join several. But since the opening of Coral Gables Stadium several years ago I gradually have drifted into the membership of a unique club that has no charter, bylaws or organized membership. IT HAS a name, though - THE FENCE HANGERS. There are all types of fences. You can name them as well as I, but the fence we hang on is a specific one at Coral Gables Stadium. It's the fence inside the field that separates the spectators from the gridiron. If you have attended a game at the stadium recently you probably have seen us there. WE USUALLY are dressed In shorts or old clothing and can be seen hanging with two arms on the fence. Occasionally we hurl loud insulting remarks at the referees in between bites on a hot dog or a Coca Cola. It's all a part of being a member of THE FENCE HANGERS. Not everyone can join. YOU HAVE to be a football expert (not just an arm-chair quarterback), you must be able to yell in a bull-like voice at the players or the officials and you must loathe sitting in the stands with the masses. Each year we have different projects. TWO YEARS AGO we attempted to skyrocket hot dog sales at the stadium with our purchase of franks. Last year we tried to make referees more accurate in officiating by calling the penalties from the fence or belittling the officials when they called a rule infraction we didn't see. THIS YEAR we feel we have a more worthwhile project. With our vast knowledge of football, we have turned our attention to the team quarterbacks. We are going to turn an all-out club effort toward seeing that the quarterbacks call the right plays at the right time in the right part of the field. WHO HAS joined this worthwhile group? If there were a membership roster, it would include some of the better names of the Southwest section and Coral Gables. We have made an effort to secure a member in each professional category in addition to at least two members from each trade. THROW IN a half dozen police officers, some firemen and several off-duty sports-writers and you have the roster. You can't tell which ones are the professionals or the tradesmen. Generally, the professionals look more sloppy (a mark of a good fence hanger) than the others. This is only because they have worn suits all day. HALF-TIMES are a welcome reprieve to most club members. The time is well spent in good fellowship. When we aren't shaking hands with other club members around us we usually can be found ogling the band majorettes through binoculars, reminiscing about the days when we played football or just scratching our feet. WHEN THE whistle is blown ending the half-time festivities, we get back down to business. Most members live within two miles of the stadium. Often times members don't know there is a game being played until they go outside of their homes and see the lights glowing in the sky. IN THAT event, club members are obliged to get to the stadium as soon as possible in the apparel they are wearing. This is one reason why most meetings don't begin until after the game has begun. But once a quorum is gathered we are busy with our duties as FENCE HANGERS.
$9 Million New Med School Being Eyed by University
The University of Miami Board of Trustees recently approved the first stage of a planning program for the development of teaching facilities of the School of Medicine adjacent to the Medical Research Building at Jackson Memorial Hospital. In joint session with the executive committee of the Medical Council, the board heard Lester Gorsline, medical consultant from San Francisco, outline the program resulting from his six-month survey of space requirements for the school. Gorsline, who has been connected with the planning of medical centers in Utah, California and other states, was retained by the board to make the study in anticipation of an entering class of 100 students by 1964. There were 80 freshmen last year among a total enrollment of 274. As outlined, the plan calls for abandoning the present facilities in Coral Gables and construction of an educational wing at Jackson containing some 230,000 square feet at an estimated cost of upwards of $9 million including equipment. An additional $9,000,000 would be needed as endowment for maintenance and repairs. In discussing the report, President Jay F. W. Pearson pointed out that this is the initial phase of a development program whose details have not yet been completed.

Jaycees Paint For Chamber
Activities of the South Miami Jaycees have covered categories from the preventive to the curative in the past few weeks. For one of the safety projects planned for this year, the Jaycees have obtained permission from School Supt. Joe Hall to distribute safety material to the first, second, and third grades of South Miami Elementary School. The South Miami Jaycees Hurricane Disaster Drive for the Texas victims was accounted a success by Alec Woodhall, project chairman. Packages of clothing and food amounting to 2 1/2 tons were shipped free to the airport by Ryder trucks and flown to Texas. Twenty-five packages were addressed to the Jaycees of Texas from the People of Dade County. The South Miami Jaycees are now maintaining an emergency disaster committee than can be put into action within short notice. As part of the Jaycees community work, three of the members, Tom Knowles, Hodson Drew and Bill Ussery Jr., painted the inside of the Chamber of Commerce Building in the latter part of August. Mac MacDonald of the Chamber assisted. Sherwin-Williams donated the paint.
