SM Changes Rules to Permit Liquor Store OK Given For Outlet At Stevens
By ED KNIGHT Correspondent City of South Miami Council Monday night took preliminary steps toward lowering its restrictions on liquor licenses which will pave the way for a package store in a Stevens Market at 6600 Red Road. The store's application had been tabled down some weeks ago. Council passed on first and second readings an ordinance amending its Code of Ordinances changing the number of feet a package store may be from any church or school. Third reading of the ordinance will be voted on Oct 3. The vote on the measure was 3-1 with Councilman George Gibbons voting against the amendment. Councilman Wallace Rinz was absent. Although the change was minor, it does allow for a State liquor store to be established in Stevens Market, 6600 Red Road. Stevens Market is across Red Road from South Miami Methodist Church, which is in Coral Gables and not South Miami. The code states that a liquor store may not be within 500 feet of a church or school. But Council went within the 500 foot limit by changing the code to exempt those package stores within 300 feet of a city boundary, even though within 500 feet of a church or school. The change was made over the objections of two interested parties, one of whom was an attorney for another South Miami liquor store. The license was the same one granted to another liquor store formerly established at 4040 Red Road. That store has gone out of business. That store got its license because of an increase in population according to the 1960 census. In other action, Council: ACCEPTED the resignation of Associate City Attorney George B. Thompson, who resigned because of probably future dealings with the city in legal matters. ACCEPTED the resignation of George Kramer, a member of the city's Planning and Zoning Board due to other commitments. Kramer's replacement on the board will be Sidney Efronson, 5930 SW 62nd Pl. APPOINTED the CPA firm of Ayers, Jureit and Bond to conduct the post-budget audit for the city's budget year beginning Oct. 1, 1960 and ending Sept. 30, 1961. Fee for the service will be $2,000. ACCEPTED the proposal of Ayers-Fryer, agents for Public Service Mutual Insurance, to provide compensation liability, automobile liability and physical damage insurance for a premium of $6,471.20 for the coming year.

That's UM $50 Million Industry
Few Miamians realize that the presence of the University of Miami in our community is financially equal to that of a $50 million commercial industry. According to the UM Development Office this is approximately the amount contributed to the economy of Dade County from all phases of the spending required directly or indirectly of the university. This includes building, utilities, payroll-spending by staff and employes on the payroll by students. Of the $20 million spent annually for construction and operations, $14 million is spent with local firms. Utility expenditures are, telephone $142,655; electricity $132,258; water $36,953 and gas $56,352. The university spends $140,000 each year on air travel alone. The total amount spent in local stores, shops or firms and professional offices such as doctors and dentists by residents on the university's payroll is well over 6 million dollars a year.
Business Fee Protest Hearing
City Commissioners are scheduled to sit down with members of the Coral Gables Board of Realtors Sept. 28 to hear their complaints about recently-increased occupational license fees. Other complaints have been registered by exterminators, who were increased from $30 to $75 and garbage and trash collectors, $250 to $500. The real estate brokers were raised from $30 to $60. In all, 18 different categories of licenses were increased. The Sept. 28 meeting has been scheduled for 7 a.m. at the Pancake House Restaurant.
