Palmetto Tries New Teaching Way
By EUNICE TALL Correspondent A new concept in teaching 11th grade English, known as Team Teaching, has been accepted at Palmetto High School. This type of teaching affords students the benefit of working in a large group while receiving the personal attention of a small classroom. Several times a week four classes or approximately 100 students report to the auditorium for their English class. The remainder of the week these same students report to four individual rooms. Under this new system of teaching, students receive certain advantages. Students will receive the combined knowledge of all teachers involved in the program. Films, many extensive lectures, and various teaching devices will be made possible. The theme for the year is "Americans and the American Dream." This program runs parallel with the 11th grade TV American History Class. Participating teachers are Harry Warren, Mrs. Lois Wells, Miss Carolyn Davidson and Mrs. Jane Simmons. Guest speakers thus far have been Dr. Charlton Tebeau, professor of history and head of the History Department at the University of Miami, and George Smart, specialist in American literature, also at the University. EXCHANGE STUDENTS This year Palmetto welcomes two exchange students; Eeva Salminen from Helsinki, Finland, and Monika Heille, from Vienna, Austria. Comparing American and Finnish schools, Eeva finds that American schools have more activities for the students. Note taking is one of the many new experiences she has encountered thus far in an American school. Monika, who speaks German and English, notes that American teenagers look older than Austrian teenagers of the same age. She also finds that Austrian students study more subjects. Eeva is staying with Mrs. Jemmie Batchellor, school librarian, and Monika lives with Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Larrimore. NEW TEACHERS Palmetto High School has added 11 new members to its teaching staff. The English department has gained Mrs. Barbara Eldridge, Miss Dorothy Cronin, Mrs. Laura Ledden, Miss Charlotte Tanner. Miss Carol Boise teaches English and Spanish and Miss Mary Stainton, serving as Palmetto Panther adviser, teaches English and journalism. Mrs. Nancy Swinney is a new member of Palmetto's library staff; Mrs. Virginia Fisher, business education department; Miss Arlene Schemer, physical education department; James Barwick, and and orchestra; and Dale Willoughby, chorus. Mr. and Miss Palmetto, selected last week, are Richard Woodruff, senior, and Candy Smith, junior. These students were selected on the basis of their attire during Palmetto Color Day, Sept. 15.
