'Hurricane' Is Way Students Keep Up
The student's weekly newspaper "The Hurricane" which averages 16 pages had humble beginnings as a one page news sheet called "The University News," which appeared on Oct. 4, 1927. Now, with a circulation of 8,500 during the fall and spring semesters and 2,500 during summer sessions, it represents a $50,000-a-year operation. It has won the Associated Collegiate Press "All American" Award for 14 years in a row. It is also rated by the American Newspaper Publishers Association as "one of the five best College newspapers in the country." DIVERSIFIED FINANCING It is financed mainly through advertising revenue with $10,000 contributed by students through their student activity fees, paid at the time of registration. The deficit is made up by the university. It is published entirely by the students, with an editorial and management staff of approximately 12 people. These positions, which are usually changed each semester, represent a full time job to the students accepting them. They are paid a nominal salary and the business manager and his staff receive advertising commissions. REPORTERS NOT PAID Students who serve as reporters receive no pay. Surprisingly, many of those connected with "The Hurricane" are not journalism majors. The majority of them are history, government or business administration majors. Students have complete editorial freedom.

M. Minette Massey is the new assistant dean of the University of Miami School of Law, one of the few women law deans in this country and the only one holding a deanship in member schools of the Association of American Law Schools, according to Law School Dean Wesley A. Sturges. Announcement of her appointment to succeed Thomas A. Thomas who requested return to fulltime teaching, was made by President Jay F. W. Pearson. The appointment is retroactive to July 1. Miss Massey joined the UM Law School faculty in 1951 on receipt of her bachelor of laws degree. She also holds the B.B.A. and M.A. degrees in government from the UM and the Master of Laws degree from New York University where she is a candidate for the Doctor of Juridical Science degree. Title of her thesis, as yet uncompleted, is "History and Development of Florida Practice and Procedure." In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Miss Massey will continue teaching classes in Florida and federal civil procedure and jurisdiction and will retain supervision of Moot Court activities in the law school program. During her 10 years with the UM Law School, Miss Massey has served as assistant law librarian, director of the evening division law program, director of Moot Court work and on faculty committees incolving curriculum, scholarship, registration and faculty-student relations. In 1959 she received the "Best Law Prof Award" from the Student Bar Association. During her undergraduate years, Miss Massey was named to Nu Kappa Tau, highest honorary for women and to "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." She is a past president of Sigma Kappa Alumnae Association and is a member of Kappa Beta Pi, international legal sorority, the Dade County Bar and the Florida Bar. She lives with her husband, George Onoprienko, assistant professor of law and assistant law librarian, at 6213 SW 26th St.
