Freshman Biology, Govt. Courses Offered on TV
The University of Miami has joined universities across the country in offering freshman courses in biology and government via nationally televised programs presented by both CBS and NBC networks, supplemented by once-a-week evening classroom lectures on campus. "The New Biology," is carried on the CBS network, WTVJ Channel 4 in Miami, from 6:30 to 7 a.m. five days per week. There will be 160 half-hour lessons, Mondays through Fridays for 32 weeks. Classes will be taught by Dr. Ray Koppelman, award winning University of Chicago biochemist, with guest lecturers in the biological sciences joining the telecast class from time to time. Persons interested in registering with the University of Miami for degree credits should apply for admission to the Evening Division prior to class opening. Registration will close Oct. 3. Both classes carry three credits for a cost of $75 per course, per semester. Dr. Robert H. Williams, chairman of the natural sciences division of UM's University College, will meet with the biology class Tuesday evening, starting Sept. 26 from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. in Memorial Classroom Building, S304A. Participating as guest lecturers on campus will be professors and research scientists from the medical, zoological, marine science and applied botany divisions who are practitioners of the "new approach" in the biological sciences. "The New Biology" is the first "College of the Air" credit course presented by the Columbia Broadcasting System and the Learning Resources Institute in consultation with the American Institute of Biological Sciences. The course is planned to include the revolutionary research findings of the post-war years. Heavy emphasis will be placed on cellular metabolism, the integrative mechanism of biological organisms and the potential importance of biochemistry and biophysics in biology. Dr. Thomas J. Wood, chairman of the government department, is professor for the class in American government, which meets Monday evenings 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. in Memorial Classroom Building, N203B. The course in American government is the first in the social science field offered by "Continental Classroom" which has presented classes in science and mathematics in the past. Sponsors for this class are the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the American Political Science Association, the National Council for the Social Studies and the National Broadcasting Company.
Helpful Breakfast
The Kenwood Dads Club assisted by Boy Scout Troop 415 will give an Aunt Jemima pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday. The breakfast is to raise money to help youth activities. The event will be held at the Kenwood Elementary School, 9300 S. W. 79th Ave.
Prof Tells Political Story Here
A two-volume report on Greater Miami's political structure by Edward Sofen, University of Miami associate professor of government, has been published this month by the Joint Center for Urban Studies of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Entitled, "A Report on Politics in Greater Miami," the study is bound in loose-leaf form so that later supplements may be included. It is one of a series of 22 similar works on U.S. cities, intended for use by researchers, teachers and students. In addition to a description and history of Metropolitan government, the report includes sections on characteristics of the area that affect its political structure.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE
