New Admissions Dean Fought Non-Academic War

Dr. Darrell J. Inabnit, former director of the U.S. Armed Forces Institute and formerly an administration official at the University of Illinois, is the new Dean of Admissions and Records and Director of the Bureau of Institutional Research. "Dr. Inabnit brings to this new position at the University of Miami broad experience in the field of admissions and records gained at the University of Illinois enriched with years of work in research as top administrator of the U.S. Armed Forces Institute," said UM President Jay F. W. Pearson. Born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Oct. 28, 1916, of Swiss ancestry, Dr. Inabnit comes to the University of Miami with a record of educational achievement and World War II combat service. After receiving his AB in medical bacteriology from the University of Minnesota in 1939, he went on active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps for three years, then became a bomber pilot and bombardier-navigator with the U.S. Air Force. Shot down while piloting a B-25 over Yugoslavia in November, 1943, he escaped through the aid of the underground and returned to aerial combat. A year later he was hit by flak while piloting a B-25 over Perugia, Italy and was severely wounded. After months of hospitalization, he was repatriated in the last exchange of prisoners of war in April, 1945. Retired with the rank of major, he holds the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters and the Croix de guerre. Following the war Dr. Inabnit resumed his education with graduate work at the University of Colorado. He continued his study at the University of Illinois where he obtained his MA, M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees, the last being in Educational Administration. He also was graduated from the Army Management School in 1959.

'Tempo' To Set Pace This Year

University of Miami students are promised something more interesting in their campus magazine "Tempo," when it re-appears this fall. It will be under the leadership of a new editor, Joe Treister. According to Ernie Pick who will serve as Art Editor, Treister is "a ball of fire, who will really make 'Tempo' a success with the students." He was also, according to Pick, responsible for making a success of his high school newspaper, at Miami "Tech" while he served as its editor. The new "Tempo" will have better layout, more student contributions and will strive to give a truer concept of life at UM, Pick said.
