Gables High Notes 'Back Through Looking Glass'

By LESLIE GROSS The theme of this year's Cavallette Musical at Coral Gables High School is "Looking Back Through the Looking Glass." This year's production honors the Cavallettes' 15th year under Mrs. Steele's sponsorship. Each act in the 1961 musical will represent an act of the same kind which was done in a previous year. On the nights of March 23 and 24, the girls will step out of their marching roles to do traditional numbers: the can-can, boogie and Charleston. Miss Patricia D. Kilgad, a Gables High Spanish instructor, was honored last week by a local radio station for Teacher of the Day recognition. The Senior Class Dance, "The Untouchables," was held on Feb. 25 in the school cafeteria from 8-11:30 p.m. Proceeds go toward the June graduation exercises. New officers for Quill and Scroll, international journalism honor society, have just been elected. The new officers for the Gables chapter are: president, Jeff Willard; vice president, Marilyn Steele; secretary, Stewart Halpert; treasurer, Bobbi Stewart; sergeant-at-arms, Jessica Snyder, and chaplain, Becky Doyle-Quinn. FBLA Taps Future Business Leaders of America, business education honor society, tapped new members over the public address system last week. President Mary Jane Ames announced the following new members: Peggy Beck, Judy Fuller, Donna Healy, Judy Jewel, Judy Laskis, Pat Neahr, Mary Beth Spiecker, Mildred Winchester, Sally Winkleman, Judy Welkind. Robert Winter of Coral Gables and Caracas, Venezuela, is a member of the varsity track team at Yale University. Track is one of Yale's 15 inter-collegiate sports. Winter, a sophomore, is a graduate of Coral Gables High, where he was president of the Student Council. The Coral Gables Literary Society recently held its introductory meeting for prospective members. Some 25 students attended the session, held at the home of Judy Broadway in South Miami. The meeting was conducted by President Leslie Gross. The evening's program was conducted by Mike Joyce, who delivered a talk comparing the poetry of Robert Frost and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Westinghouse Talks Science and Math Honor Society recently held a meeting open to guests who, with SMHS members, wished to hear project reports on Gables' winning Westinghouse projects. Six of the eight Gables seniors to earn Honors Group recognition in the Annual Science Talent Search told of their original research work. They were Jeffrey Platt, Donna Finerty, Warren Kirsch, Katie Kamp, Eloise Melson, and Leslie Gross. Four of the six are SMHS members. The rest of the evening's activities were conducted by President Bob Eckert. The session was held at the home of Maxine Master.

CLOWNS AND MUSIC MAKERS are just some of the entertainers lined up for Riviera Junior High School's "Riviera Revue." The show will unfold in the auditorium Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Admission is adults, 50 cents, and children 25 cents (matinee) and 50 cents (evening). At top, left to right, are Drew Keyes and Peter Davis, two clowns who'll ramble and frolic. Accordionists, top to bottom, are John Shaw, Steve Rosekrans and Tony Fitch. Headlining the variety show are three emcees, all portraying odd characters. There will be Ned Tannebaum, a crusty, old Southern colonel; Donna Evans, a spinster, and Mitchell Marks, a scholarly chap.

Girl Crashes Plate Glass In Spider Panic

A 17-year-old Southwest section girl suffered severe cuts early Sunday morning when she was panicked by a spider and ran through sliding glass doors at a Coral Gables home. Joan Audes, 3797 SW 91st Ave., was treated by Gables Firemen I. T. Williams and Paul LeFebre and at Doctors' Hospital for lacerations. According to Gables police, the victim was sitting in the living room at 831 Andalusia shortly after 1 a.m., when she saw the spider. It frightened her so that she jumped up and ran through the glass door in attempting to get away from it. She suffered cuts of the left and right leg and left elbow by the shattering glass.
