Malcolm Lovell Heads Dade Tax Review Board
Malcolm R. Lovell, 2220 Country Club Prado, has been named chairman of the new Dade County Tax Review Board. Lovell recently resigned his position as director of Jacksonville Properties, a holding company of the Alfred I. duPont estate, to "avoid conflicts of interests" in his new post. The duPont interests in the area include those of the Florida East Coast Railrod and real estate holdings. Lovell moved to Coral Gables from New York in 1947 where he was an investment broker and headed his own Wall Street firm. Tough Job He indicated Monday that he expects the new Metro job to be one of the toughest and un-popular he's ever tackled. Coral Gables, an overwhelmingly residential community, would be hard hit by the re-assessment program, Lovell indicated, but some relief could be anticipated — especially homeowners living in the older residences. Actual market values and not replacement cost will be an important factor which will be considered by the new board, Lovell said. Lovell has held important posts in the past with the Roosevelt administration. He was appointed assistant to the Undersecretary of Agriculture and later financial advisor to the Federal Housing Administration. Wrote Book He authored the book, "Two Quaker Sisters," a Book of the Month selection in 1937. His family have been Quakers for 300 years. Lovell, who has been active locally in civic affairs, was a founding director of the Sara Delano Roosevelt Interfaith House, director of the Protestant Council, and director of the released time program for religious instruction in New York Public schools. He is president of the Miami branch of the English Speaking Union of the United States and is listed in "Who's Who in America."

STUDYING A MODEL of the new Westbrooke Country Club, are, left to right, Sheldon Kay, developer; Morris Fox and Harold Pomerantz, members of the corporation, and Harold Moss, developer. The club will be located just 10 minutes from downtown Coral Gables, according to Kay.
New Country Club Will Serve Southwest Area
Construction has begun on the new Westbrooke Country Club, located just 10 minutes from downtown Coral Gables. The club is planned as the most complete family recreation and social facilities in Florida. A scale model of the entire club layout has been built and put on display at 8659 Coral Way, temporary office of Westbrooke Country Club. Developers Sheldon Kay and Harold Moss said the country club, being built at a cost of more than $1,000,000, would be completed by summer. 20 Acre Club The 20-acre club, which will be at 8500 SW 8th St., will cover an eight-city block area. Facilities will include private cabanas, locker rooms, dining rooms, banquet hall, cocktail lounge, teenage activity rooms, sun deck, shuffleboard, six tennis courts, a regulation softball diamond, putting green, handball courts, children's swimming pool, as well as the Westbrooke Swimming Pool for adults. The adult pool, built in the shape of a "W", will be the largest swimming pool in Florida and has been designed to meet all professional and amateur regulations for use in tournaments. The pool will feature five diving boards. Kay said the club will be built to fit the family social and recreational needs in the growing Dade County area. Wide Membership "Membership will come from throughout Dade Conuty," Kay said. "Because of our excellent location (on main thoroughfares to Coral Gables and South Miami as well as to North and South Dade via the nearby Palmetto Expressway), we feel Westbrooke will provide families who desire to take advantage of these private facilities a nearby country club location." Club executives have already begun plans for a year-round program. Moss said that Westbrooke's cocktail lounge and other rooms would feature "name entertainment" and that its social halls and meeting rooms would be made available to many new groups in the area. Moss said the architecture and decor of Westbrooke will be of a type never before featured in any construction in the United States. Westbrooke was designed by Don Reiff Associates.
Shopping Center Architects Named
Robert Bookbinder, developer of the proposed 70-acre Concord Shopping Center in Southwest Dade, has named Don Reiff Associates, architects and engineers, to design the "shopping city." Bookbinders said construction would begin on the new center as soon as engineering plans are complete. He also announced that Webster Stone, Inc., 407 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, has been named exclusive leasing agent for the projected center. Concord Shopping Plaza will be built at Bird Road between 112th and 114th Ave.
