Quaker Meeting Opened In Quiet Ceremony
By GAIL MARSHALL A new, ranch-style meeting house now stands at the corner of Sunset Rd. and Corsica Ave. Constructed of native rock for the Miami Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the building breaks with traditional Pennsylvania design, yet still maintains the Quaker group's simplicity. The meeting house, designed by Marian Manley, consists of one room which can accommodate 100 people, another room which can be converted into two classrooms, a library, kitchen and patio. The $45,000 structure was realized through private contributions. Lyle Roberts is the builder. The Friends previously met in homes of members and at Simpson Gardens. The group was later housed by the Miami Hearing Society and then moved to the Sunset Elementary School. Since 1950 members have met at the Young Women's Christian Association. Dedication of the building was held on First Day, Sunday, Feb. 26, in the traditional meeting form. There is no written program and the meeting begins with silence. The people then speak about their feelings without being introduced. All members are responsible for the ministry of the Meeting. Earl Redding, pastor of the Programmed Friends Meeting, offered a prayer. His is the only other Quaker group in the Miami area, and services are conducted in Spanish. Landyn Haynes spoke on the meaning and place of Quakerism today. Bernard Walton, representative of the Friends General Conference, gave the main address consisting of a history of Friends and a charge to the Meeting. The Conference gives aid and advice to new meetings. Susanna Parry gave a history of the Miami Friends Society. Organization of the Miami Friends is attributed to winter vacationists whose desire for religious worship united them. The Meeting now consists of about 50 members. First Day School is at 10 a.m. and meeting for worship at 11 a.m. There are approximately 12 organized meetings in Florida, a large number for a Southern state. Five of these have their own houses.
