THE EXCITING PACE of youth is today recaptured in memories for 80-year-old Eleanor Adams Matthews. And also making her moments more lively are the antics of her cat.

Profitable Youth Means Joy Later

By RAYMOND LANG Memories and a 13-year-old cat named "Joe"... they help an 80-year-old woman to conquer loneliness. Eleanor Adams Matthews has spent most of her life in the quiet dignity of a college campus. And the author of several history books has spent years in a library, thumbing through pages of books to collect data. Today she lives alone with her memories and her cat at 732 Majorca Ave. Is she lonely? Decidedly not! Joy Of Memories The former English professor and president of Ohio's Oxford College for Women will tell you that if you spend your youth profitably, memories can be of immeasurable joy in later life. "There are so many things to think about," said Mrs. Matthews, who received her Bachelor's and Master's degree at the University of Cincinnati in the 1900's. "I think about the life the pioneers lived—so different from ours. And I can turn on a light and realize they grew up using candles." Mrs. Matthews, once a research student at England's Oxford College, has collected data on her ancestors and their struggles in early America. Wilderness Work "There was a particular great grandfather of mine," she recalled, "who walked to work through the wilderness—with a gun. "He was a decorator. And that part of the forest was full of Indians at the time and they were pretty strong on the massacre." She leaned back in a pale-colored sofa and probed the past for a pleasant memory. "There was another great grandfather of mine who was a man of mystery." She leaned forward. "He left his home in Scotland when there was fighting over there in the 1800's to come to America. "And he was sought after by the people in his clan to come back and take over an earldom. But he wouldn't go back!" While she spoke, "Joe" dashed back and forth. Mrs. Matthews looked down at him and a big smile broke across her face. "He's my secretary," joked the woman who, despite her years, likes to write and edit manuscripts submitted to her by hopeful authors. "He'll sit up on my desk and work over my things," she explained. "He was a kitten when he appeared on the scene. He came and demanded something to eat so I adopted him."
