THERE ARE 16 QUESTION MARKS running through the mind of Mrs. Leonard Wirkus, as she ponders the problem of how to narrow them down. Mrs. Wirkus, who is looking up for a moment from a Ponce de Leon High School yearbook dating back to 1941. She hopes to hold a reunion May 20 of that year's graduating class, and she's contacted all but 16.
136 Graduates once Class Of '41 Plans Reunion
By RAYMOND LANG As sheets of icy wind blast in from the Artic, a man watches a sliver of steel slice the air as a plane lands at an airport in Anchorage, Alaska. And on the other side of the world, in Europe, another man s..ds by his U. S. Air Force f.....ceptors as he scans the sky and wonders about the metallic flash he saw among the clouds. In Coconut Grove Here, in Coconut Grove, another young man fingers a test tube in each hand as he pours a stream of liquid into one and then holds it high against the light to examine it. These three men and 133 other persons have something in common. And most of them will soon come to Coral Gables because of that common bond. The 136 persons make up the 1941 graduating class at Ponce de Leon High School (now Coral Gables High). And many of them will meet May 20 at a reunion. The task of contacting the member's of the school's first graduating class has fallen into the hands of one of the alumnae, Mrs. Leonard V. Wirkus, 8501 SW 53rd Ave. And of the entire class spread across the corners of the world, Mrs. Wirkus has gotten in touch with all but 16. The 16 have no friends or relatives here to tell of their whereabouts. And there are also some whose whereabouts Mrs. Wirkus knows, but she also knows quite well that they won't be able to make the reunion. One is Jack Cannon, who works for an airline in Anchorage, Or Lloyd B. Spain, who's with a fighter-interceptor outfit in Europe. But some haven't strayed too far from home. Such as Robert Erwin, who has a chemistry laboratory in Coconut Grove. Mrs. Wirkus said she hopes to hear from all of those in the graduating class. And she doubly hopes they'll help her contact "the missing 16." Though the reunion is planned for May 20, it's not definite where the affair will be held. One of the possibilities is that the reunion will be held at the home of alumnae Ethel Dimmig Davidson, Or at the school. But one thing IS sure. Come the 20th of May, the door will be swung open on a closet full of partially forgotten, but always fond, memories.

Delay Granted For Fiscal Jibe
Coral Gables has received approval of Metro on extension of time for the city to conform with the Metropolitan Charter requirements that municipal and Metro fiscal periods be the same. The current fiscal year in Coral Gables runs from July 1 to June 30. But the Metro fiscal year begins Oct. 1, which means that in 1962 the City Commission will have to adopt a 15-month year. Coral Gables requested the delay again this year because of its peculiar bonded indebtedness situation which will be cleared up by the next fiscal.
