City may pay for crane removal
The crane hovering atop an unfinished building at 911 E. Ponce de Leon will soon be gone, by Coral Gables City Commission edict. The only problem is that no one knows just who will take the crane down, who will pay for its removal or when it will happen. The attorney for Ponce Developers (who own the building,) Richard Brickman, told the commission Tuesday, May 25, "I am ready to surrender my client to the executioners." Brickman said, "We have not been able to comply with the resolution ordering us to resolve this matter passed at the last meeting. We have tried. "The fact that the crane must be removed does not dissuade the developer from grappling to resolve this, if not through negotiations, then through the courts or administrative boards." Mayor Robert Knight suggested having the subcontractor who owns the crane remove it with the city paying the bill and then placing a lien against the developer's property. City Attorney Charles Spooner advised against the move because of legal complications and the time delay such a move would create. Instead, the commission passed a resolution telling Spooner to work with the developer, the crane owner and City Manager J. Martin Gainer to decide on the speediest way to get the crane removed. Gainer told the commission, "The crane is a public nuisance. Authorize us to spend the funds to get it down." Finance Director Ken Allyn told the commission that the city had an extra $4,000 on its contingency fund as a result of a mid-year budget adjustments and said that money could be put towards removing the crane, a job expected to cost roughly $6,000. The final resolution directed the city attorney and city manager "to take steps necessary to remove the crane." Gainer said he was afraid to guess how long it might take to get the crane removed, but Knight said he was optimistic that it will be gone in two weeks. — ERICA MEYER
