SW, Killian vie in Capitol competition

For five months they have been working out six days a week getting ready for the final competition. The six Southwest Miami High School students who make up the Youth Physical Fitness team came in second in local competition and third in their district. June 16 to 19, they will be competing in the national championships of the Youth Physical Fitness Program in Washington, D.C. One of 16 high school teams in the United States selected by the Marine Corps and General Foods, the Southwest High team will vie against other champions, including Killian High School's team. "It is not only a national competition, it is also an intercounty competition since we have to beat Killian," said Leon Neck, 16, one of the team members. "This is the best thing that has happened to Southwest in athletics for a long time," Leon said. "We are not just doing it for ourselves but for the school." For 100 per cent performance, students participating in the competition have to do 30 pull-ups, 100 sit-ups in two minutes, 60 push-ups without stopping, a standing broad jump for a minimum distance of nine feet, 10 inches and a 300-yard shuttle run. In the district level, the team competed against 200 other teams, while in the local level about 1,600 teams entered the contest. "We started working out a little before Christmas and we are out here everyday and on Saturday," said Coach Hugo Hammond. "Last year was the first time Southwest entered the competition and this is the first time we have had the opportunity to compete nationally. "The team is improving every day and we aren't going up there for a fiasco - we plan to win," Hammond said. Nicky Simpson, 17, a senior at Southwest, is the team's high scorer. "I'm in this not only for the competition but also because there is a chance I could get a scholarship," Nicky said. The top three seniors in the national championships will receive $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000 scholarships. Like most team members, Randy Bonsignore, 17, is good at the sit-ups, push-ups and pull-ups, but is still working hard to improve in the broad jump. For Fred Everts, 17, and Fred Zoller, also 17 and a team alternate, the workouts are coupled with football practice as well. "We stay after school and work out, go home and then come back to school at 5:30 p.m. for football practice," Everts said. "Killian scored higher than we did in the local competition but that doesn't mean they are going to beat us in Washington," he said. "We have the best coach in this entire thing," he added. Mike Radley, a junior and a member of the wrestling team, was also a member of the Youth Fitness team last year. "We are way better than we were last year," he said. "I hope we can win." While in Washington, the students will receive blazers and will attend a parade and banquet in their honor. Expenses for the trip are being paid by General Foods Corporation. -ANA MARIA ALVAREZ

Home & Garden Question to Mr. Luis Bueno, The Greenhouse from Nancy Paul, Miami I have recently purchased an Anthurium. Please advise me as to how to best care for it, also why are Anthuriums as expensive as they are? Answer: Anthuriums are truly beautiful plants, they are also slow and hard to propagate. The time and care needed to bring an Anthurium to maturity is the reason for the cost. After maturity, Anthuriums are relatively easy to care for - shade and high humidity are vital with fertilizing with Peters 20-20-20, good results are obtained with Sheep Manure tea. Use plenty of Bug-Geta and 1 tsp. of Cygon per gallon of water every ten days for mealy bugs. With proper care, your Anthurium should give you a great deal of pleasure. WE HAVE IT! Cream softens bite of curry

gourmet goodies marion richey Unlike the curries of India, those of France are just barely flavored with this e xotic spice, and in the following recipe the cream further softens the piquant flavor. Chicken a l'Indienne A three pound chicken Three tablespoons butter Two tablespoons oil One onion sliced thin One and half cups chicken bouillon Half cup white vermouth One cup heavy cream One teaspoon curry powder One tablespoon flour One tablespoon chopped parsley Cut chicken into pieces. Melt two tablespoons of butter in a skillet, add the oil and saute chicken pieces until golden, remove chicken to a covered pot and saute onion in the same skillet. Using a slotted spoon remove onion to put with chicken pieces, pour remainder of fat in skillet and turn down to low heat. Pour in chicken bouillon and vermouth, add powder and simmer while scraping up pieces stuck to bottom of skillet. Pour sauce over chicken, cover and simmer 30 minutes until chicken is tender. Remove chicken to serving platter and keep warm. Soften remaining tablespoon of butter, blend the flour into it then stir into juices in pot, stir until thickened then add cream and heat to just below boiling. Pour over chicken, sprinkle with parsley and serve with plain white rice.
