Grad ceremonies to begin with awards breakfast

A dismal rain fell on Christopher Columbus Friday, May 21, the last day of school. "Good-bye Columbus" was chalked on the lawn by the "Class of '76." Many said good-bye for the summer and some forever. The 1976 Columbus Graduation will begin with the Awards Breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Columbus Cafeteria, followed by ceremonies at the Miami-Dade Community College South Campus gymnasium, Saturday, May 29. Mass will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the distribution of diplomas. Steve Ruden is the class Valedictorian and Allen Lowe is the Salutatorian. Brother PatrickMcMorrow will give a message of praise and farewell to the Seniors. Columbus High Michael Manning. Among the graduates, 161 are going to college next fall. The other 13 are undecided, traveling or going into the military. Five Columbus coaches and several athletes received awards at the annual Archdiocesan Sports Awards Night sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Coach of the Year awards were given to Dave Riley (football), John Hammontree (track), Brother Leo (tennis), Brother Kevin (basketball),and Brother Robert Lewis (baseball). John Bow was named the Player of the Year. Paul Plescow received the first Julio Portela award, named for a Columbus student killed by lightning. Player of the Year Awards were given to Mike Whittington (football), William Lennon (track), Marty Schuette (basketball), and Louis Paggley (baseball). The Traffic Safety Poster Contest, sponsored by the AAA gave certificates to three Columbus students out of 35,000 entrants from the U.S. and Canada. Jorge Viso received a commendation certificate. Tony Scalise and Luis De La Aguilera receivedmerit citations. Phillip Kent, younger brother of Columbus junior Christopher Kent, received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond for second place in the grade-school category. The Log, Columbus' student newspaper, was distrub ted on Friday. The twelve page issue was the largest one put out in recent years at Columbus. A fine job was done under the direction of John Burke, editor-in-chief,and Mark Rodgers, sports editor and Mrs. Helen Burton, Advisor. Students enjoyed the Seniors' last wills featured in the issue. Everything from a "a nuclear chalk-chucker" to the book "101 Ways to Calm the Psychotic Teacher," were left behind.

New class officers are elected

Coral Gables High Pam Mandel. Officers for the 1976-77 Junior and Senior classes were elected last Wednesday. Elected for the Junior class were: James Schainuck, president; John Lehman, vice-president; Joan Labbie, secretary, and Roy Paskow, treasurer. Those elected for the Senior class officers were: Mark Swanson, president; Jorge Mantilla, vice-president; Cathy Bryant, secretary; and Randy Redlien, treasurer. Several Gables athletes were named to the Miami Herald's All-Dade teams. Mary Kirby was named to the first team of Girls' All-Dade Track for her record setting shot-put throw of 42' 10 1/4". Joe Freshley was named to the Boys' Track second team for the 440. John Virgin (tennis) and Danny Diaz (gymnastics) were awarded honorable mentions. These athletes will receive their All-Dade medallions during an awards assembly at Gusman Hall. The new thespians have been chosen for the 1976-77 school year. They are: Jill Ferrara, Lori Dick, Jason Solomon, Tara Brown, Laura Lewis, Karen Ray, and Tony Sirgany. Over 50 Gables band, chorus, and orchestra members participated in the Superintendent's 5th Annual Honors, Art and Music Festival. They rehearsed and performed with other high schools from around the county. They gave their performance last Sunday, at the Miami Beach Theater of the Performing Arts.

Elected to board

Dr. Charles Campbell, professor of music at the University of Miami, Dr. Marc Rowe, chief pediatric surgeon at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Jerome Scherr, president and owner of Parrot Jungle, have been elected to Palmer School's Board of Trustees. The three trustees are parents of Palmer students and will bring the total of board members to 14.

Class reunion

The Miami Senior High School Class of 1951 will hold its 25th Reunion on Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Miami Springs Villa. Cocktails begin at 7 p.m., dinner will follow. The Reunion Committee is trying to contact all class members who may not have received information about the coming event, as well as graduates of classes before or after 1951 who may wish to join the group and renew acquaintances. The best

Twelve-year-old Bill Serle won the award for "Best Overall" poster in a contest held at Coral Gables Hospital among employes' children to illustrate the theme of National Hospital Week, "Healthy Birthday, America." Bill's mother, Carolyn, a nurse at the hospital, visits him in his room. Bill won five tickets for Goodyear Blimp rides and passes to Florida State Theaters. He made the poster before going into the hospital for an operation. He lives at 11725 SW 119th Ave.
