Explosion, fire; first thought: Terrorists
From Page 1 lice and fire departments. Her daughter, Ellen, home on vacation from Stetson University, directed traffic around the burning car until officers arrived. The car fire and explosion occurred about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25. By 6 p.m., the burned shell was being towed away and the street was quiet. Mrs. Tyson and her son Ricky stood with Ellen near their home. "There was so much smoke," Mrs. Tyson remembered. "When the gas tank went it sounded like 'baroom,' " Ricky said. Mrs. Diane Neuman, arriving at her Sevilla home from the grocery store, saw the burning car. She began taking color pictures. Amandi gave her his business card so she could get the photographs to him later. "He wasn't injured," Mrs. Neuman said, "but he kept rubbing one hand. It wasn't really burned, but it was singed. He was lucky to get out of the car." Amandi, of 16961 SW 302nd Terr., in Homestead, is a watchmaker and, according to his card, an expert on antique clocks. Chief Gossett said Amandi burned one finger, but was not seriously hurt. Gossett said the fire had been caused by a broken fuel line. "The fuel line broke and there were all kinds of sources to ignite it under the hood of the car," Gossett said. "An exploding gas tank can do the damage of a bomb," he said. "But this one was just a car fire." — ERICA MEYER
