Teachers prepare lessons now for year 2000

By LINDA HAMLIN Correspondent Preparing teachers for the future is the goal of Dr. Robert Shostak, 7927 SW 105th Pl., chairman of Secondary Education at Florida International University. Teachers in his graduate course, Education 625, being held this summer, are planning school curricula for the year 2000. Based on research about the direction of different educational fields, students plan what their school will look like, the geography of their community, how many teachers will be needed and how classes will be taught in a modern technological society. Gary Adams, 10030 Nicaragua Dr., a history teacher from Westminster Christian School, said that the course will help him in terms of school administration. "I can see how to run a school in the future. "Some of the ideas discussed in the class are too Utopian and I feel won't come about. To me there's too much emphasis put on what will be radically different from today. But, the concept of looking into the future is a valuable concept." Some different ideas one group decided to incorporate into their school in the year 2000 were that life expectancy had been increased to 200 years and chemical technology would aid psychologists in helping persons adjust to life situations. Shostak, originator of the course, wanted to give people in his class the "freedom to look into the future and be creative. By doing this, some things could change immediately." A high school science teacher, Ellen Cohen, 6565 Santana St., said that because of her studies in the course last summer, she received a mini-grant from the government to develop the science curriculum for slow readers in Broward County. "Because of this class about the future, I was able to find out about where science is going. Classes in the future will be more interdisciplinary and career-oriented. They'll contain a more practical aspect," Mrs. Cohen said. Gill Ritt, 9815 SW 164th St., said the course showed him "changes today with an eye to where we're going." One "future" idea Ritt would like to see incorporated in schools now that could serve both the schools and taxpayers money, would be to utilize outside businesses for vocational training.
