It's just you and your machine for creative sewing adventure

A sewing machine is a talented sewing partner that helps you best express your own creative self. Read the Machine Manual — a booklet that comes with the machine. It will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the sewing machine. Including how to thread it, adjust it, use it, clean it, oil it and keep it in excellent running condition. A regular stitch length is 12 to 15 stitches per inch. This is your permanent stitching; use shorter stitches for light fabrics and longer stitches for heavier ones. Reinforcement stitches are used to strengthen a particular area such as a curve or corner — are 20 stitches per inch. Basting — stitches that hold layers of fabric in place temporarily until the final stitching is done — are six or less stitches per inch; They can be done by hand as well. To get a backstitch, use the reverse button or lever on the machine to stitch backwards for about one-half inch to secure the beginning and end of your permanent stitches. Here are some simple steps that anyone can follow to thread than machine, no matter what make or model you own. 1. Place thread on spool pin. 2. Carry thread through thread guide and down around needle thread tension. Make sure your thread goes between the two metal disks and does not slip behind them. 3. Bring the thread up through the take-up lever. 4. Now, run it down and through thread guide. Your machine may have a second thread guide near the needle. 5. Lastly, thread the needle either from front to back or from left to right, depending on your machine. 6. Hold the thread end and turn the hand wheel until the bobbin thread appears. Pull through the bobbin thread, and slip both threads under and behind the presser foot. One of the basics for a neatly finished garment is to stitch a good seam. Thread your machine and turn the hand wheel to raise needle to the highest point so thread won't pull out as you start to stitch. Pull needle and bobbin threads behind presser foot. Turn hand wheel to lower needle into fabric about one-half inch in from start of stitching line. Lower presser foot. Hold thread ends and backstitch to edge of fabric. Stitch forward at an even pace. At end of seam, backstitch again. Raise needle and lift presser foot to draw fabric behind presser foot. Clip excess threads. To stitch curves use the seam guide that attaches to the machine's bed. If it's the magnetic type, set it an angle for inside curves. Topstitching is done on garment's right side that can play a decorative rule or be a part of the construction. Topstitching often follows the construction lines of a garment. In addition to keeping seams and facings lying flat, it accents seams, pockets, collars, hems and special details such as tabs. Most fabrics can be topstitched with the same thread that is used for their construction. You might even like to try constrasting color threads. Try a sample of the topstitching on a scrap of fabric first, so you can see the effect it will produce. Whenever possible, do topstitching on the right side. This stitching is usually more attractive than the bobbin side, and you are better able to control it. If you wish to topstitch where there is no edge to guide your stitching, hand-baste a guide line and stitch along this line. This is often done on pockets and seams of a jacket and pants.
