South Miami Lutheran Church to celebrate birthday in prayer
A special worship celebration commemorating the 28th birthday of South Miami Lutheran Church, 7190 Sunset Dr., will be held Sunday, July 11, at 10:30 p.m. The Rev. E. W. Albrecht, who served as pastor from 1950 to 1970, will preach on the theme "Christian Love." Another former pastor, the Rev. Charles Corbett, is to serve as lector. Charlotte Warrington will sing several anthems for the occasion. The present pastor, William L. Nies, will be the liturgist and offer the prayer of the re-dedication. A family dinner is to be served in the social hall of the church following the worship service. Israel South Congregational participation in a soci-drama on "The Important Things of Judaism" will be the highlight of the Friday evening service, July 9, at Temple Israel South, which meets at Sunset Congregational Church, 9025 Sunset Dr., at 8 p.m. Gary Eisenberg, activities director of Temple Israel of Greater Miami, will lead the group drama. Family service A family-oriented service will be featured at Temple Bet Breira's Friday service, July 9, at the Killian Pines United Methodist Church, 10755 SW 112th St., at 7:30 p.m. The evening will have singing, story telling and family participation. Bible school St. Paul Lutheran Church, 10700 SW 56th St., will hold their Vacation Bible School this year beginning Sunday, July 12, and running through July 22. It will be held daily from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. A donation of $2 is requested at the time of registration to help cover the costs of materials and refreshments. Youth chapel Larry Bertrand, of University Baptist Church, 454 Anastasia Ave., will conduct a Summer Youth Chapel every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., for high school youth of the church. Meditation Lester Bashara, minister-teacher of the Science of the Mind, will offer a series on meditation and self-awareness for five weeks at the Miami Church of Religious Science, 7800 Miller Rd., on Tuesday mornings beginning July 6, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on Wednesday evenings beginning July 7, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Call 274-0571 for details.
Hebrew Academy wins recognition for excellence
Students from South Dade Hebrew Academy, 11801 SW 74th Ave., have won the school national recognition for excellence in education through the National Bible Contest held in New York City May 23. Three Academy students participated in the contest. Dalit Kugel, 12, 10642 SW 77th Ave., placed ninth in the nation in the 6th to 8th grade category. She received a certificate of honor. Mona Offenback 12, 8440 SW 104th St., and Aaron Goldberg, 11, 4211 SW 97th Pl., also participated. The students were accompanied to New York by Dror Zadok, Hebrew Director of the school. The contest, conducted in Hebrew, is sponsored by the American Association of Jewish Education. The first three place winners then compete in the world Bible contest in Israel. Zakok's Hebrew Department has won several other honors this year. For the finest Jerusalem studies project, the Academy won the Jerusalem flag at a ceremony held at the Hebrew Academy of Greater Miami. The flag is awarded by the Jewish National Fund and the Central Agency for Jewish Eduation. Jonathan Rachline, 8100 SW 136th St.; Mark Fisch, 9131 SW 66th Terr.; and Elaine Needleman, 10511 SW 46th Terr., all Academy students, won National gold medals of honor this year. The highest awards given in the AMI (Knowledge of Israel) test. More than 16,000 students national participated in the contest. Erwin Marshall, principal, reports that in English studies his students also excelled. In the Stanford Achievement Test, Academy students "consistently score two or more years above their own grade level in reading, math and language skills."
She'll soon marry
Mrs. Vivian Loois Hoff, 8910 SW 125th Terr., announces the engagement of her daughter, Bettina Lynn Hoff, to Robert Wayne Crenshaw. Miss Hoff is a graduate of Killian High School, and attends Miami Dade Community College. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Lee Crenshaw, 13445 SW 99th Ct. He is also a graduate of Killian High School. He now attends the University of Florida.
