Scouts help young campers develop artistic talents

Kirk Kraver, 10, a student at Coral Gables Youth Center Art Camp, works on his weaving. Photo by ANA MARIA ALVAREZ With the help of members of Girl Scout Troop No. 260 and a former member of the troop who is now a professional painter, a group of young artists at the Coral Gables Youth Center had the opportunity to develop their talents. The students, participating in the first of a series of summer art camps offered in conjunction with the Girl Scout Council and the School of the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center, received their certificates of completion and exhibited their work last week. The Youth Center classrooms were lined with colorful paintings, arts and crafts, ceramics and weaving all done by the forty students during the two-week "Adventures in the Arts" summer program. Cheryl Laria, Susan Bebber and Sally Ohnesorge, members of Girl Scout Troop 260 and students at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, served as volunteer teacher aides for the program. A member of the troop in 1956, Anne Kinggard served as the art teacher for the summer camp. The second summer camp in the series will be held at the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center, 7867 N. Kendall Dr. The students who enroll will be dived by age groups and classes run for two weeks, Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuition for the summer camp is $50 for each two-week session plus $25 material fee. For further information about the summer camp call Elma Ettman, 444-6554. — Ana Maria Alvarez
