Car tags can be renewed by mail
The 1977 license tag decals are on sale now through Aug. 20, and motorists can renew their registration by mail and avoid the long lines that are sure to form as the deadline nears. Forms and complete instructions in English and Spanish were mailed recently by the tax collector's division. This year for the first time, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is issuing registrations based on car owners' birth months. The decals on sale this summer will expire at the end of the month preceding the registered owner's birth month. Automobile owners born between July and October who renew their registration this July or August will pay taxes through their birth month in 1977. Those born November through June will pay taxes for the number of months left in the year from their birth months. Those with joint automobile ownership can use first name appearing on the certificate to renew their registration: Motor homes will renew registration for six months and from then on they will renew it annually during the month of January. Trucks weighing more than 5,000 pounds and company vehicles tags will be renewed for 11 months. Those who prefer to make license tag purchases in person can go to any of the county's three tag agencies. They are located at the South Dade Government Center, 10710 SW 211 St., the County Courthouse, 73 W. Flagler St., or at 862 NW 23rd St., for Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tag decals are also on sale from private tag agencies for an additional $1 fee. In the South and Southwest areas, these include the American Legion Auto Tag Agency, 303 Alhambra Circle; Auto Tag Agency, 11295 S. Dixie Hwy.; Canny Auto Tag, 8450 Bird Road, and Tropical Auto Tag Agency, 5704 Bird Road. New decals should be affixed over the present decal on the license plate by Aug. 20.
