Sharpshooting expertise earns cop state title
Coral Gables Police Officer John Firley broke a record in sharpshooting over the weekend of June 25. The 40-year-old, nine-year veteran of the force returned from Eustis, Fla., as winner of the Florida State Pistol Championship. In a difficult match among municipal, county, state and federal teams (U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps), Officer Firley shot the highest score ever recorded in the competition — a score of 2,622, with 111 bullseyes. "I'm very happy about, it," said Officer Firley, who added he won the same competition in 1972. The State Championship ended a winning week for the officer. On Sunday, June 20, the Palmetto Pistol Club held its yearly match and Officer Firley won Grand Aggregate, first place. And on Wednesday, June 23, the Fraternal Order of Police State Championship was held in Pompano Beach, Fla. Again Officer Firley won overall first-place. The Gables police officer has had years of experience in pistol shooting. Besides serving with the U.S. Border Patrol, he served with the U.S. Army as a member of the Pistol Team, before joining the police department. Combat pistol shooting, said Officer Firley, has meant a great deal in his life. He said it has given him the opportunity to "travel and to meet the world's best shooters and some of the world's finest people. "The ability to shoot well has given me a great deal of confidence to perform my job as a police officer without unnecessary fear or anxiety." Officer Firley said he recognized the controversy over recent years concerning personal use of handguns. But he said it's people, not the guns themselves, that can be dangerous. "It's a matter of educa- tion," said the officer who lives in South Dade with his wife, Low, a nurse at Doctors Hospital. "I think everyone should have the right to decide if they keep a gun in their house. "A lot of people say they're scared of guns. But guns don't kill people — people do." While Officer Firley was winning the State Championship, the Coral Gables Police Pistol Team, composed of Assistant Chief Del Edwards, Officer Harvey Davis, Officer Ted Lally and Officer Firley, took second in overall state competition. — ELIZABETH OWEN Officer John Firley . . . he had a winning week
