Even with problems fishing was worth the trip

south miami report ...edwin knight It happens to the best of us. We gotta get away from it all, chuck the traffic and the deadlines and the telephones and hope for a while that we can create an existence out of what we enjoy doing. Wayne and I chose last weekend as our get-away time, he because he was on vacation and I, because Wayne was on vacation. The place we chose: Jewfish Creek. But this time we were going to take my old wooden boat. It's big, with plenty of walking around room and with only a 40 HP Evinrude, it rides heavy in the water and skims on a plane out to the flats. The boat and the trailer gave us no trouble and as we pulled into Gilbert's, we realized we wouldn't have to be concerned about whether we had greased the trailer wheel bearings well enough. It was overcast, no sun as we cranked up the motor, listened to it purr for five minutes while we got our bait and slipped away from the dock and headed for Barnes Sound. We tried Thursday Point first, a cove far out on the right as you come omt of Barnes Sound. We cut the motor, put our bobbers on our lines and began fishing. No fish here, so we tried Marker 29. We had to head back to the creek for this. So we cranked up the 40 Evinrude again and headed for the marker. But on the way, the motor conked out. We tried starting it, succeeded a few times, but we ran down the battery trying. At 7:30 the next morning, I began looking for someone to give me a tuneup on the big motor. Gilbert's couldn't do it; too booked up. They recommended another place down U.S. 1. I found this, and after swatting mosquitos and pleading with the man to give my motor a tuneup, I learned that he was booked up too. He told me of another place, Rowley's, down the road and I tried there. "No mechanic, now," that man said. But he told me of another place, farther down U.S. 1. "Yes, we can do it," that man said, as he introduced a boy who appeared to know little about outboard motors. We decided that they would fix the motor at dockside, in about an hour. We hadn't seen the sun since we arrived, and it began drizzling as the boy took off the flywheel and took a look at the motor's points. His name was Jim. He'd been working on outboards since he was 12 and from his efficient efforts, I realized he knew what he was doing. We had gotten the battery charged up and as he pulled out the motor's choke, the motor started up and roared as the prop churned up the water. The rain had stopped, but it was still cloudy. We fished the rest of Friday and when we went out early Saturday, the sun broke through the cloudy skies for the first time. But Saturday's fishing was short-lived. We had to leave by noon Saturday, back to the traffic, the deadlines and the telephone.
