Tropical Park gets federal $$
The long abandoned Tropical Park race track property at Bird Road and the Palmetto Expressway will become a multi-facility public park by 1978. On Monday, July 12, the federal government granted $638,000 for the project. Dade County will match the money from Decade of Progress bonds approved by voters in 1972. U.S. Rep. Dante Fascell (D-Fla.) announced the grant approval and said the funds will be administered through the state's Department of Natural Resources. The Miami Toros soccer team will eventually play its games at the new park which will also include a football field for high school games, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, horse-back riding facilities, a lake, boat docks, a fishing pier, picnic shelters, bike paths amd boat ramps.

Fruit stand can stay

John Wasner, 17920 SW 89th Ave., says he has been buying fruit and vegetables at the Roslunds' stand for 10 years. "I can remember when my mother would give me money to buy fruit at the stand after church," said Wasner. Nearly 20 persons arrived at the Roslund's stand Tuesday morning to ride in carpools to the Dade County Court House. Roslund submitted 1,544 signatures on a petition in favor of keeping the stand open. Acting County Manager Dewey Knight explained to Manna and the other protestors that present zoning would not allow such a stand. The land has been used in the same manner since 1950. Under a grandfather clause, as long as the Roslunds continue to use the land as they have for the last 10 years, without expanding, they are legally in the right, said Knight.
